João Paulo II Airport (LPPD) is the principal gateway to the Azores, sited on the island of São Miguel a short distance west of Ponta Delgada's city centre. Operated by ANA Aeroportos de Portugal, it offers a single long hard-surfaced runway with an ILS approach, making it a straightforward yet dramatic Atlantic destination for simulator pilots flying oceanic or island-hopping routes. Its history stretches back to the late 1960s, and it remains the busiest airfield in the archipelago, serving as a hub for the SATA Group of airlines.

Overview

João Paulo II Airport lies on São Miguel, the largest island of the Azores, close to Ponta Delgada, and is operated by ANA Aeroportos de Portugal. It is the principal airport of the Azores archipelago, handling both inter-island services and long-haul flights to mainland Portugal, continental Europe and North America. For the simulator pilot, the appeal lies in its mid-Atlantic setting, its single long ILS-equipped runway sitting on a coastal shelf, and the sense of arrival after a long oceanic crossing.

Airspace & Location

The airfield is located in the parish of Relva, about two kilometres (one nautical mile) west of Ponta Delgada city centre, on the south coast of São Miguel island in the Portuguese Azores. It sits in isolation within the mid-Atlantic, with no other significant airports nearby on the same island; the surrounding airspace is orientated around the airport's own approach and departure routes over open water to the south and along the coastline.

Runways

The airfield has a single physical runway, orientated 12/30, with a hard (asphalt) surface that is lit along its length. The declared length for runway 12 is 8155 ft and for runway 30 is 7370 ft, the difference reflecting declared distances rather than separate strips. Runway 30 is equipped with an ILS approach, giving a precision option for arrivals from the northwest.

Radio & Navigation

Approach control operates on 119.4 MHz, with the tower on 118.3 MHz. An ILS is available on runway 30 for instrument approaches, complementing the visual circuit for arrivals in benign weather.

History

The airport was inaugurated on 24 August 1969 by President Admiral Américo Tomás, following construction planning that began in 1963. At opening, transferred from an earlier site at Santana, the runway measured 1800 metres (5900 ft) and the field was known locally as the Aeroporto da Nordela, reflecting its position at the northwest edge of Ponta Delgada. It was built to serve inter-island connections and links to mainland Portugal, initially using a single Boeing 737 operated by the national flag carrier, with regular flights to Lisbon beginning two years after opening. The passenger terminal was completed in 1995, at which point the airport was renamed João Paulo II in honour of Pope John Paul II's visit to the Azores in 1991. In December 1998 the concession to operate the airport, along with several other Portuguese airports, was granted to ANA Aeroportos de Portugal, which also took charge of future development and construction.

The Airfield Today

João Paulo II Airport is the major hub for the SATA Group of airlines, comprising the inter-island carrier SATA Air Açores and the international carrier Azores Airlines, and has served as a base for Ryanair since April 2015. It handles scheduled domestic services linking all islands of the Azores as well as Madeira and mainland Portugal, alongside international flights to and from Europe and North America operated by a range of carriers.
