History

Vila Real Airport has developed as the municipal airfield for the city of Vila Real, located a short distance to the northwest. As of May 2023 a new terminal building was under construction, intended to bring the fire service, police, customs and the local airclub together under one roof, with completion expected by the end of that year. The field has hosted scheduled air services linking it to other regional Portuguese airports.

Vila Real continues to host scheduled flights under a public service obligation, with Sevenair operating routes connecting the airport to Bragança, Lisbon-Cascais, Portimão and Viseu. General aviation activity includes a local airclub based at the field. A new terminal building, encompassing facilities for the fire service, police, customs and the airclub, has been under construction, reflecting ongoing development of the airport's infrastructure.
