Les Eplatures Airport (LSGC) sits high in the Jura mountains above La Chaux-de-Fonds, Switzerland, at an elevation of 3,356 feet, making it one of the higher and more distinctive fields in the country for visiting VFR pilots. Its single tarmac runway, oriented 06/24, serves executive, recreational and some air taxi traffic.

Overview

Les Eplatures Airport is a small airport serving La Chaux-de-Fonds in the canton of Neuchatel, Switzerland. It caters mainly to executive and recreational flying, with some air taxi and charter activity, and its high-altitude Jura setting and single runway make it an interesting and slightly demanding destination for a simulator pilot flying VFR in the region.

Airspace & Location

The airfield lies near the town of La Chaux-de-Fonds in the canton of Neuchatel, in the Jura mountains of western Switzerland, and falls within the Geneva FIR. It is one of the country's minor regional airports, sitting at a notably high elevation for a Swiss aerodrome.

Runways

Les Eplatures has one physical runway, 06/24, with an asphalt surface. Runway 06 is 3,621 feet long and runway 24 is 3,585 feet long; both directions are lit.

Radio & Navigation

Air traffic services are provided by Les Eplatures Tower on 118.125 MHz, with radio communication conducted in English and French. The field has no ILS approach.

History

The first aircraft landed at the field in 1912, though the airport concession itself was not granted until 1955. At the end of the Second World War, Swiss authorities selected a number of existing airfields for modernisation as regional airports, forming a second tier of infrastructure supporting the country's primary urban airports; Les Eplatures was one of five sites chosen for this role.

The Airfield Today

Les Eplatures continues to operate as a small regional airport supporting executive and recreational flying, along with some air taxi and charter service. No airline currently operates scheduled or charter services from the field.
