Ulrichen is a small, high-altitude airfield in the village of Ulrichen, in the Obergoms municipality of the Goms district in the Swiss canton of Valais, close to the Nufenen Pass at the head of the Rhone valley. Sitting at 4,419 feet amid the Alps, it offers a single hard-surfaced runway pair and is best approached with the mountainous terrain and thin air firmly in mind.
Ulrichen airfield lies beside the village of the same name in the high alpine valley of Goms, in the Swiss canton of Valais. It is a compact mountain airstrip rather than a commercial aerodrome, and its main interest to a simulator pilot lies in the dramatic alpine setting near the Nufenen Pass, one of the highest paved pass roads in Switzerland, and the general challenge of operating from a short, high-elevation runway surrounded by peaks.
The airfield sits in the Obergoms municipality (formed in 2009 from the merger of the former municipalities of Ulrichen, Oberwald and Obergesteln) in the district of Goms, canton of Valais, in the upper Rhone valley of the Swiss Alps. It lies near the Nufenen Pass, which connects the valley with Airolo in Ticino, and is set among high mountain terrain typical of this part of the Alps.
Ulrichen has a single physical runway orientated 05/23, with a hard surface and a length of 2,444 feet. There is no ILS at the field.
The village of Ulrichen has a long history predating any aviation use of the site. In September 1419, during the Raron affair, a Bernese army of some 13,000 men invading over the Grimsel Pass was ambushed and fought to a standstill near Ulrichen by a much smaller Valaisan force of 400 to 600 men under Thomas Brantschen, in what is known as the Second Battle of Ulrichen. The resulting stalemate led the exhausted Bernese forces to withdraw, and subsequent negotiations at Zurich and Zug produced the 1420 treaty that ended the conflict and confirmed a degree of self-determination for Valais. Ulrichen itself remained an independent municipality until 1 January 2009, when it merged with Oberwald and Obergesteln to form Obergoms.
