Kägiswil Airfield (LSPG) is a small former military airstrip near Sarnen in the canton of Obwalden, Switzerland, set in an Alpine valley at over 1500 feet elevation. It remains under a cooperative arrangement between local aviators and the Swiss defence authority as its long-term civilian future continues to be worked out.

Overview

Kägiswil Airfield lies close to the town of Sarnen in the canton of Obwalden, in the heart of Switzerland's pre-Alps. It is a former military airfield now operated on a short-term basis by the Obwalden Airfield Cooperative (FGOW) under a building lease from armasuisse, the Swiss defence procurement agency. For a simulator pilot, it offers a compact, single-runway Alpine strip with the kind of terrain-framed approach typical of Swiss valley airfields.

Airspace & Location

The airfield sits at Sarnen in the canton of Obwalden, in mountainous terrain typical of central Switzerland, at an elevation of 1519 feet. It lies not far from Alpnach Air Base (LSMA), whose tower also provides radio coverage for Kägiswil.

Runways

Kägiswil has a single physical runway, 02/20, with a hard surface and a length of 2950 feet. There is no ILS approach available.

Radio & Navigation

An information frequency of 134.125 MHz (INFO) is published for the airfield, alongside a tower/AFIS frequency of 128.475 MHz, identified as Alpnach TWR. No instrument approach or navaid is associated with the field.

History

Kägiswil began life as a military airfield and remained under the control of the Swiss defence authority, armasuisse, for many years. In 2020 the Federal Council's Aviation Infrastructure Sectoral Plan (SIL) stipulated that the former military field should be converted into a civilian airfield, but resistance from local landowners has so far prevented this conversion from being completed. In May 2024 the Obwalden Cantonal Council instructed the cantonal government to pursue civil aviation use for helicopters at Kägiswil by amending the cantonal structure plan, a move that would also require changes to the existing SIL object sheet. As a result, the federal offices FOCA and armasuisse agreed with the Canton of Obwalden to begin a new planning process, expected to start in spring 2025, to coordinate the competing spatial demands on the site.

The Airfield Today

Flight operations at Kägiswil continue under a building lease agreement between the Obwalden Airfield Cooperative (FGOW) and armasuisse, extended to the end of September 2025, which secures short-term use of the field. FGOW continues to work towards securing fixed-wing aviation at Kägiswil on a long-term basis, while cantonal authorities are separately pursuing civilian helicopter use of the site. The airfield's longer-term status therefore remains under active review as planning discussions proceed.
