Bern Airport, also known as Bern-Belp Regional Aerodrome (ICAO: LSZB, IATA: BRN), lies within the town limits of Belp just southeast of the Swiss capital. It combines a modest scheduled and charter operation with general and business aviation, and offers an interesting mix of hard and grass runways for the visiting VFR pilot.

Overview

Bern Airport, marketed simply as Bern Airport and officially the Regionalflugplatz Bern-Belp, is a regional aerodrome serving Bern, the capital of Switzerland. It sits within the town limits of Belp and is operated by Flughafen Bern AG (formerly Alpar). For a simulator pilot it offers a compact but characterful Alpine-fringe airfield, with a long hard runway alongside grass strips, seasonal holiday charter traffic, and an active general and business aviation scene.

Airspace & Location

The aerodrome is located within the town limits of Belp, in the Canton of Bern, a short distance southeast of the city of Bern itself. It sits at coordinates 46.9122N, 7.4994E at an elevation of 1670 feet.

Runways

Bern offers three physical runway pairs. The main runway, 14/32, is hard-surfaced and lit, with the 14 threshold length given as 5011 feet and the 32 threshold as 5658 feet; runway 14 is equipped with an ILS. A secondary grass runway, 14R/32L, is 2166/2165 feet long and lit. A shorter grass runway, 16/34, measuring 1770 feet, has no lighting listed.

Radio & Navigation

Radio services at Bern include Aerodrome frequency A/D on 127.325 MHz, an ATIS broadcast on 125.13 MHz, Ground on 131.41 MHz, a Miscellaneous frequency on 123.4 MHz, and dedicated Glider Ops on 135.75 MHz. Tower services are provided under the callsign ALPAR TWR on 119.7 MHz, with a secondary Tower frequency on 121.03 MHz. Runway 14 is served by an ILS.

History

The aerodrome traces its origins to the period before the Second World War, and in 1945 the Swiss national parliament chose Kloten, near Zurich, over a site at Utzensdorf near Bern for the country's first international airport, though inter-urban airport plans for the Bern area were retained to placate local farming interests opposed to a larger footprint. A planned expansion of the Belp site in 1947 was rejected in a popular referendum, and it was not until 1950 that the first concrete airstrip was built at Belpmoos. The operating company Alpar was renamed Flughafen Bern AG in 2014. Over the years there were multiple further attempts to establish a full international airport in or around Bern instead of the small regional aerodrome at Belp, all of which failed, leaving Bern-Belp as the region's principal aerodrome. Scheduled links have come and gone over the decades, including a Munich service operated by bmi regional in competition with SkyWork Airlines until bmi regional withdrew in December 2016.

The Airfield Today

Bern Airport operates 365 days a year and continues to combine seasonal holiday charter flying with general and business aviation. In 2026 the airport is served by seasonal charter operations to Mediterranean and island destinations such as Cagliari, Calvi, Djerba, Elba, Heraklion, Jerez de la Frontera, Jersey and Guernsey, Kos, Larnaca, Malta, Monastir, Mykonos, Olbia, Palma and Rhodes, flown by airlines including SkyAlps, Avanti Air, Helvetic Airways, MHS Aviation, Chair Airlines, Universal Air and Blue Islands. The airport publishes separate operational guidance for business jets and helicopters above 3.5 tonnes maximum take-off weight and for lighter general aviation traffic, reflecting its role as a working general and business aviation field alongside its scheduled and charter operations.
