Adana Şakirpaşa Airport (ICAO: LTAF) lies in the Seyhan district of Adana, southern Turkey, close to the city's historic centre. Once the region's principal commercial gateway, it lost its airline traffic to the new Çukurova International Airport in August 2024 and has since become a general aviation field supporting private flying, pilot training and air sports.
Adana Şakirpaşa is a general aviation airport operated by the General Directorate of State Airports (DHMİ) in the Seyhan district of Adana, on Turkey's Cilicia plain. For nearly ninety years it was the main commercial airport serving the region, but since the opening of Çukurova International Airport in August 2024 it has taken on a quieter role, now given over to private aviation, flight training and air sports, which makes it an interesting and historically rich destination for the visiting simulator pilot.
The airport sits at Seyhan, Adana, around 2.3 km west of the city's historical centre, on farmland originally chosen for the site in the 1930s. Approach services in the area are provided by Incirlik APP, reflecting the proximity of the well-known Incirlik Air Base airspace in the wider Adana area.
Şakirpaşa has a single physical runway, 05/23, of hard surface (asphalt) measuring approximately 9,020 ft in length and lit for night operations. An ILS is available for runway 05, giving instrument approach capability at this substantial strip despite the field's general aviation status. Field elevation is 56 ft.
Pilots can expect the following frequencies: Incirlik APP on 126.5 MHz, ATIS on 119.225 MHz, Ground on 121.9 MHz and Tower on 121.1 MHz.
Adana Airport was built on farmland at Şakirpaşa, about 2.3 km west of Adana's historic city centre, and opened as a joint civil-military airfield on 2 October 1937. It became a full civil airport in 1956 and went on to serve as the main commercial airport for the Cilicia region, with passenger numbers roughly doubling between 2011 and a 2018 peak of over 5.6 million. The last scheduled commercial passenger flight departed shortly after midnight on 11 August 2024, when all airline services were transferred to the newly opened Çukurova International Airport, bringing to a close the airport's 87-year career as Adana's principal gateway.
Since the transfer of airline traffic to Çukurova International Airport in August 2024, Şakirpaşa has operated as a general aviation airport, now used primarily for private flying, pilot training and air sports. The long, lit runway with its ILS approach remains available, giving training and private operators a well-equipped base close to the city.
