Antalya International Airport (LTAI/AYT) is Turkey's major Mediterranean coast gateway, lying a few kilometres northeast of Antalya city centre. It is one of the busiest airports in the Middle East, handling millions of leisure passengers each summer, and its three parallel hard-surfaced runways with ILS coverage make it a straightforward but high-traffic destination for simulator pilots flying airliner or general aviation operations into southern Turkey.

Overview

Antalya International Airport serves the city of Antalya on Turkey's Mediterranean coast and is one of the country's principal gateways for international and domestic air travel. It is operated by Fraport TAV Antalya Airport Terminal A.S. and is a focus city for Turkish Airlines, with operating bases for several low-cost and charter carriers including AJet, Corendon Airlines, Freebird Airlines, Pegasus Airlines and SunExpress. For a simulator pilot the field is notable for its trio of very long parallel runways and the intensity of mixed airline and charter traffic during the European summer leisure season.

Airspace & Location

The airport lies at coordinates 36.9003N, 30.7928E, close to the city of Antalya on Turkey's southern Mediterranean coast, at an elevation of 171 feet. It sits within Turkish controlled airspace with its own approach and tower services covering arrivals and departures along the coastline.

Runways

Antalya has three parallel physical runways, all oriented 18/36. Runway 18L/36R is 11,173 feet long, hard-surfaced, lit and equipped with ILS. Runway 18C/36C is 11,149 feet long, also hard-surfaced, lit and fitted with ILS. Runway 18R/36L is 9,792 feet long, hard-surfaced and lit, though without an ILS. The field elevation is 171 feet.

Radio & Navigation

Antalya offers a full range of radio services. Approach is available on 122.05 MHz, with a separate upper/arrival Approach frequency on 119.65 MHz. The ATIS broadcasts on 118.275 MHz. Clearance Delivery and Ground operate on 121.9 MHz, with an additional CLD frequency of 123.175 MHz. Tower is split by area of operation, with 125 MHz for the eastern side and 126.1 MHz for the western side. Handling services (HAVAS) can be reached on 131.45 MHz. The airport is equipped with ILS approaches serving its two longer runways, 18L/36R and 18C/36C.

History

Antalya Airport opened in 1960 and has grown into one of Turkey's principal international airports, driven largely by the country's tourism boom along the Mediterranean coast. By 2003 the airport was handling 10 million passengers a year, a 78 per cent increase since 1998, and it has regularly ranked among the busiest airports in Europe and the Middle East for international traffic. In July 2011 it was named Best Airport in Europe in the 10-25 million passenger category by Airports Council International. Plans exist for a new airport to be built west of Antalya, near Kas, to supplement the existing facility.

The Airfield Today

Antalya Airport today comprises three terminals, two international and one domestic, and remains one of the busiest airports in the Middle East, handling over 39 million passengers in 2025. It is a focus city for Turkish Airlines and hosts operating bases for AJet, Corendon Airlines, Freebird Airlines, Pegasus Airlines, SunExpress, Mavi Gok Airlines and Southwind Airlines, with a wide mix of European and Turkish carriers using the field, particularly during the summer charter season. An ongoing expansion and modernisation programme is under way to increase capacity and improve infrastructure at the airport.
