Kayseri Erkilet Airport (ICAO: LTAU, IATA: ASR) is a joint civil-military aerodrome lying some 5 km north of Kayseri in central Turkey, serving as a major gateway for travellers heading into the Cappadocia region. It offers a single long, hard-surfaced instrument runway and a mix of scheduled domestic and international airline traffic alongside its military role.
Erkilet Airport is a public airport and military airbase situated just north of the city of Kayseri, operated jointly by the DHMİ (State Airports Administration) and the Turkish Air Force. It is best known as one of the principal air gateways for visitors travelling on to the Cappadocia region, and for a simulator pilot it offers the chance to fly into a substantial, ILS-equipped Anatolian airfield with a long single runway shared between airline jets and military traffic.
The airfield lies in Kocasinan district, about 5 km (3.1 mi) north of the city centre of Kayseri, in Kayseri Province in central Turkey. As a joint civil-military facility it sits within controlled airspace associated with the airport, reflecting its dual role for the Turkish Air Force and for scheduled airline operations.
Erkilet has one physical runway, 07/25, some 9,821 ft (about 2,993 m) long with a hard surface and runway lighting. Runway 25 is equipped with an ILS approach, giving instrument guidance for arrivals from that direction.
Pilots should expect to work Approach on 122.1 MHz, Ground on 121.95 MHz, and Tower also on 122.1 MHz. Runway 25 has an ILS approach available for instrument arrivals.
Erkilet International Airport opened on 15 November 1998 and has operated ever since as a dual-use facility, functioning both as a Turkish Air Force airbase and as a public airport under DHMİ management. A new international terminal opened in March 2007, roughly doubling capacity from an earlier 600,000 passengers a year to about one million, and the airport was built to be capable of handling aircraft as large as the Boeing 747, though in practice narrow-body jets such as the Boeing 737 and Airbus A320 are the more common visitors.
Today Erkilet functions as a busy regional hub, handling both domestic services and a range of seasonal and year-round international routes to destinations across Europe, making it one of the principal air links into the Cappadocia tourist region. Alongside its civil airline operations, the airbase continues to serve the Turkish Air Force, giving the field a mixed military and commercial character that a visiting VFR or IFR pilot should bear in mind when planning a flight into LTAU.
