The airfield opened on 15 November 1988 as Nevşehir Tuzköy Airfield. It was renamed Nevşehir Kapadokya Airport on 17 December 1998. Early traffic was modest, with the airport handling around 27,832 passengers along with 392 cargo and 833 passenger aircraft movements in 2006, but passenger numbers have grown substantially since, reaching 754,489 in 2025.
The airport is operated by the General Directorate of State Airports Authority and handles scheduled flights, with AJet operating to Istanbul-Sabiha Gökçen and Turkish Airlines to Istanbul. Ground handling and FBO support, including fuel, customs and immigration coordination, ground power and crew arrangements, are available at the field, with reported operating hours of 0001-2359 local time throughout the week. Passenger and movement figures have risen sharply in recent years, reflecting the airport's growing role as the main air link into the Cappadocia tourism region.
