Çanakkale Airport lies on the Asian shore of the Dardanelles serving the city of Çanakkale in north-western Turkey, close to the historic Gallipoli battlefields. It is a modest single-runway airport operated by the State Airports Authority, handling domestic scheduled traffic and occasional charter work, and offers a straightforward ILS-equipped runway for visiting pilots.

Overview

Çanakkale Airport is a public aerodrome serving the city of Çanakkale on the Asian side of the Dardanelles, operated by the General Directorate of State Airports Authority (DHMİ). It opened in 1995 and today handles domestic scheduled and charter flights, most notably to Ankara. For a simulator pilot the field is notable for its single long hard-surfaced runway equipped with an ILS, and for its proximity to the Gallipoli peninsula, one of the most historically significant stretches of coastline in the region.

Airspace & Location

The airport sits near the city of Çanakkale, on the Asian shore of the Dardanelles strait opposite the Gallipoli peninsula, a location steeped in the history of the World War I Dardanelles Campaign. The field lies at an elevation of 23 feet above mean sea level.

Runways

Çanakkale has a single physical runway, 04/22, a hard-surfaced strip lit for night operations and measuring approximately 7717 feet in length. An ILS is provided for runway 04.

Radio & Navigation

Approach control is provided by Yesilkoy Approach on 122.1 MHz, with the tower operating on 123.6 MHz.

History

Çanakkale Airport opened in 1995 to serve the city and the wider Çanakkale Province. Passenger numbers were modest in the airport's early years, with total traffic recorded at 18,423 in 2009. The airport's busiest days each year fall on 18 March and 25 April, both dates of major significance in Turkish and Allied history connected with the Gallipoli Campaign of the First World War: 18 March marks the anniversary of the Ottoman Empire's defeat of the Allied naval attempt to force the Dardanelles, while 25 April is commemorated as Anzac Day.

The Airfield Today

The airport is operated by the State Airports Authority and continues to handle domestic scheduled services, currently including flights to Ankara operated by AJet, alongside occasional charter and general aviation movements.
