Dalaman International Airport (LTBS) lies on Turkey's Mediterranean coast in Mugla province, serving as the principal gateway to the Turquoise Coast resorts of Marmaris, Fethiye and Oludeniz. It is a busy commercial field with a single long runway equipped with ILS, making it a straightforward if high-traffic destination for a simulated approach along this stretch of coastline.

Overview

Dalaman International Airport sits close to the town of Dalaman on Turkey's southwestern Mediterranean coast, roughly midway between Marmaris and Fethiye. It is operated as a concession, with Ferrovial holding a 60 percent stake in the managing company alongside the Turkish infrastructure group YDA. For a sim pilot the field offers a long, ILS-equipped runway set against the backdrop of the Turkish Riviera, and its status as one of the country's busiest tourist airports means plenty of airline traffic to share the pattern with.

Airspace & Location

The airport lies in Mugla province on Turkey's Mediterranean coast, about 5.5 kilometres south of Dalaman town centre, between the resort areas of Marmaris and Fethiye. Its coordinates place it at 36.7125N, 28.7914E, and as a large international airport it sits within controlled Turkish airspace served by its own approach and tower frequencies.

Runways

The field has a single physical runway, 01/19, of 9848 feet (about 3003 metres) with a hard surface. It is lit and equipped with an ILS, giving instrument approach capability to both runway directions. A full-length parallel taxiway exists alongside the runway and could in principle be brought into use as a second runway, though it is not configured as such for normal operations.

Radio & Navigation

Dalaman provides a full set of ATC services on discrete frequencies: Approach on 119.225 MHz, ATIS on 127.35 MHz, Ground on 121.9 MHz and Tower on 118.5 MHz. The runway is equipped with an ILS, supporting instrument approaches to either end of runway 01/19.

History

Dalaman Airport opened in 1976 and for its first years handled only domestic traffic; international flights began in 1989, reflecting the growth of package tourism along Turkey's Aegean and Mediterranean coasts. The international terminal building later received recognition in 2006, being highly commended in the Architectural Review Awards for Emerging Architecture. In 2022 Ferrovial Airports acquired a 60 percent stake in the company managing the airport's concession, in partnership with the Turkish infrastructure group YDA.

The Airfield Today

Dalaman remains one of Turkey's busiest airports, ranked as the country's seventh busiest overall and fifth busiest for international passenger traffic, owing to its proximity to Marmaris, Fethiye and Oludeniz. The airport operates separate domestic and international terminals and continues to be run under the Ferrovial-YDA concession, with a single main runway supported by a full parallel taxiway.
