Anadolu Airport, officially renamed Hasan Polatkan Airport in 2017, sits within the grounds of Eskişehir Technical University's Faculty of Aeronautics and Astronautics at Tepebaşı, on the outskirts of Eskişehir. It was built primarily as a training aerodrome for the university's Flight Training and Air Traffic Control departments and remains best known for that role, while also handling a modest amount of civil air traffic. For a simulator pilot the appeal lies in its unusual character as a working university flight school with a full-length, ILS-equipped runway more typical of a much larger commercial field.
The airfield is located at Tepebaşı, within Eskişehir Province in western Turkey, at an elevation of 2589 feet. It sits on the campus of Eskişehir Technical University's Faculty of Aeronautics and Astronautics, a short distance from the city of Eskişehir itself.
Anadolu Airport has a single physical runway, 09/27, aligned almost exactly east-west. It is 10,023 feet long with a hard surface and is lit along its full length. Runway 09 is equipped with an ILS, giving instrument approach capability from the east.
Air traffic services are provided on Tower frequency 123.75 MHz. Runway 09 carries an ILS approach for instrument arrivals from the east.
The field opened to air traffic in March 1989 under the name Eskişehir Anadolu Airport, its establishment following the founding of the Civil Aviation Vocational Highschool (SHMYO) in 1986, which itself grew into Eskişehir Technical University's Faculty of Aeronautics and Astronautics. Its original purpose was to support the flight training and air traffic control education programmes of that institution, though over the years it also began to serve the wider air transport needs of Eskişehir and the surrounding region, including scheduled and unscheduled passenger flights, patient transport, firefighting support and air taxi operations alongside its core training role. In 2005, following sustained demand from the local population, expatriate communities in Belgium, non-governmental organisations and local business interests, the university brought the airport up to the standard required for international operations; it was declared a temporary air border crossing that September, and the first international flights, to Brussels, began the same year. In 2017 the airport was officially renamed Hasan Polatkan Airport, having previously been known as Anadolu University Airport.
The airport continues to function primarily as the flight training base for Eskişehir Technical University's Faculty of Aeronautics and Astronautics, supporting both Flight Training and Air Traffic Control education. Alongside this training role it handles a small volume of scheduled and charter international traffic, with services operated by Corendon Airlines, SunExpress and TUI fly Belgium to Brussels, and a seasonal service to Ostend/Bruges.
