Chişinău International Airport (LUKK) is Moldova's principal gateway, lying some 13 kilometres southeast of the capital's centre. Named in honour of composer Eugen Doga, it hosts scheduled and charter operations for a handful of European and Middle Eastern carriers and is the only airport in the country offering regular passenger services, making it a natural VFR and IFR destination for pilots visiting Moldova.

Overview

Chişinău International Airport serves the Moldovan capital as its sole commercial gateway, operated by the Chişinău International Airport Company. It is a hub for FlyOne, HiSky, SkyUp Airlines and Wizz Air, and is served by a range of European legacy and low-cost carriers as well as Middle Eastern operators such as flydubai. For a simulator pilot, the field offers a substantial international arrival with a long, ILS-equipped runway and full ATC services, set against the backdrop of Moldova's largely uncontrolled countryside.

Airspace & Location

The airport lies approximately 13 kilometres southeast of central Chişinău, within Moldovan airspace. It operates with a full suite of air traffic services, including approach, tower and ground control, indicating that the field sits within controlled airspace appropriate to an international airport of this size. It is the only airport in Moldova with regular passenger flights, making it the principal focus of controlled airspace in the country.

Runways

The field has a single physical runway, 08/26, aligned east-west. It is 11,712 feet long with a hard surface, is lit, and is equipped with an ILS, giving pilots a precision approach aid for both directions of use in poor visibility or at night.

Radio & Navigation

Pilots can expect the following services and frequencies: Approach on 125.9 MHz, ATIS on 133.7 MHz, Ground on 121.8 MHz, and Tower on 118.1 MHz. The runway is ILS-equipped, providing an instrument approach for arriving traffic.

History

Scheduled air services to Chişinău began on 24 June 1926, on the Bucharest–Galaţi–Chişinău and Iaşi route, operated first by CFRNA and later by LARES; a commemorative plaque marking this first flight is displayed at the airport. The airport itself opened in 1960, with the main terminal building constructed in the 1970s. It was granted international airport status on 31 May 1995, and underwent a major modernisation completed in 2002 by the Turkish company Akfen Holding, which added a new annex terminal and substantially expanded capacity. The airport closed briefly on 24 February 2022 following the closure of Moldovan airspace after the Russian invasion of Ukraine, reopening partially on 22 March 2022. Wizz Air suspended flights to and from Moldova on 14 March 2023 over airspace safety concerns, before announcing a return to the country from 16 December 2024. A second runway, 09/27, was brought into operation on 13 September 2018 to supplement the original east-west runway. The airport is named after Moldovan composer Eugen Doga, and a decommissioned Tupolev Tu-134 stands as a monument at the airport entrance.

The Airfield Today

Chişinău International Airport remains Moldova's only airport with regular scheduled passenger flights and serves as a hub for FlyOne, HiSky, SkyUp Airlines and Wizz Air, alongside services from Aegean Airlines, airBaltic, AJet, Austrian Airlines, Azerbaijan Airlines, Eurowings and flydubai among others. The Civil Aviation Authority of Moldova has its headquarters on the airport property. The airport continues to see infrastructure investment, including a loan-funded programme for the rehabilitation of runways, taxiways and aprons.
