Košice International Airport (LZKZ) is Slovakia's second-largest international airport, serving the eastern city of Košice from the suburb of Barca. It offers scheduled and charter services on a single long runway equipped with ILS, making it a straightforward destination for both airliner and general aviation flights in simulator terms.
Košice International Airport lies in the Barca district on the southern edge of Košice, Slovakia's second city, and is operated by Letisko Košice - Airport Košice, a.s., with Vienna's Schwechat Airport holding the largest shareholding. It handles scheduled and charter, domestic and international traffic, and is the second-busiest airport in the country after Bratislava. For a simulator pilot it offers a single long, well-equipped runway with an ILS approach, set against the backdrop of eastern Slovakia's hills.
The airport sits about 6 km south of Košice's St Elisabeth Cathedral, at an elevation of 745 feet, and is served by both approach and tower air traffic control. As a designated international airport handling scheduled jet traffic, arriving and departing aircraft can expect to work with air traffic control throughout the approach, circuit and departure phases.
The airport has a single physical runway, 01/19, 10,180 feet long with a hard surface and runway lighting. Runway 01 is equipped with an ILS approach, giving instrument-rated pilots a reliable means of arrival in poor weather.
Pilots can expect to work Košice Approach on 119.85 MHz and Košice Tower on 120.4 MHz. Runway 01 is served by an ILS, supporting instrument approaches to the field.
Construction of the airport began in the 1950s near the suburb of Barca, with work on the first passenger terminal, a hangar and a new control tower starting in 1954. Direct flights between Košice and Prague began in 1955, and the power supply was upgraded with more powerful transformers in 1962. Growing traffic required an enlarged passenger terminal by the mid-1960s. The foundation of the SNP Air Force Academy in 1973 strengthened military aviation at the site during the Czechoslovak era, and between 1974 and 1977 the runway was extended by 1,100 metres, the power supply rebuilt, and a lighting system installed to meet CAT II ICAO specifications. Military flying at the airport ended in 2004. A further extensive reconstruction of the runway and apron areas took place in 1992-1993. Construction of a new passenger terminal began in 2001 and was completed in 2004, later winning the title of Construction of the Year 2005. The operating company Letisko Košice - Airport Kosice, a.s. was established in 2004, and a strategic partner joined in 2006; the airport was subsequently privatised, with Vienna's Schwechat Airport becoming majority shareholder through KSC Holding, a.s. and the Slovak Republic retaining the remaining share.
Košice International Airport today operates as a scheduled and charter hub with direct services to destinations including Prague, Warsaw, Zurich, Vienna, London Luton and Stansted, Liverpool, Dublin, Zadar, Bratislava, Malaga and Rome, flown by carriers such as Austrian Airlines, LOT Polish Airlines, Ryanair, Smartwings, Swiss International Air Lines and Wizz Air. It remains the second-largest international airport in Slovakia by traffic.
