Poprad-Tatry Airport serves the Slovak ski resort town of Poprad, close beneath the High Tatras mountains, and is among the highest-elevation airports in Central Europe. It handles scheduled and charter airline traffic alongside general aviation and search-and-rescue operations, making it a distinctive destination for pilots flying in mountainous terrain.

Overview

Poprad-Tatry Airport lies in the town of Poprad in the Presov region of eastern Slovakia, serving as the gateway airfield for the High Tatras mountain range. It is notable for its elevation, one of the highest of any airport in Central Europe, which together with the surrounding mountain scenery makes it an interesting and demanding destination for visiting pilots. The airport supports scheduled and charter airline services, general aviation, and is a base for search and rescue air operations.

Airspace & Location

The airfield is situated at Poprad in the Presov Region of Slovakia, close to the High Tatras mountain range. It operates as an airport handling airline, general aviation and search-and-rescue traffic.

Runways

Poprad-Tatry has one main hard-surfaced runway, 09/27, measuring 8,484 feet, lit, with an ILS serving runway 27. A shorter secondary grass runway, 07R/25L, measuring 2,471 feet, is also lit.

Radio & Navigation

The airfield operates under the callsign Poprad-Tatry, with APPROACH and TOWER both on 121.35 MHz. An ILS is available for runway 27 on 110.1 MHz.

History

Poprad-Tatry Airport opened in 1938. Its high elevation, at 718 metres, has featured in its operational history: in December 1980 an East German Interflug Tupolev Tu-134 en route from Berlin Schonefeld to Budapest was diverted to Poprad after a bomb threat specified that any device would detonate below 600 metres above sea level, a threshold the airport's elevation exceeded, and the flight landed safely with a backpack later found aboard. In January 2010 police training with explosive-detection dogs led to a piece of the explosive hexogen being mistakenly left among passenger luggage on a Danube Wings flight from Poprad to Dublin. On 3 August 2012 a Mi-8 helicopter engaged in construction support work to a mountain hut suffered tail rotor damage after a sling load struck the blades during a steep descent; the crew managed to fly the aircraft back to Poprad, where it crash-landed within the airport perimeter, rolling onto its side with two of the three occupants suffering minor injuries. On 26 May 2021 an Aerospool WT-9 Dynamic suffered a nose wheel collapse on landing, with the pilot uninjured.

The Airfield Today

The airport currently handles scheduled and charter airline operations, though it offers no domestic flights within Slovakia; charter flights are mainly operated during the winter season. It also supports medical flights, VIP flights, ad hoc charters and ACMI operations, and serves as a base for search and rescue air services alongside general aviation activity. Scheduled and seasonal airline services include arkia's seasonal flights to Tel Aviv and Wizz Air services to London-Luton and, from October 2026, Prague, along with a seasonal Wizz Air route to Gdansk.
