Providenciales International Airport (ICAO: MBPV, IATA: PLS), officially renamed Howard Hamilton International Airport in 2023, is the principal international gateway to the Turks and Caicos Islands, sitting on the island of Providenciales in the Caicos group. It is a busy hub for interCaribbean Airways and Caicos Express Airways, and for a simulator pilot it offers a long single hard-surfaced runway set in a tropical island environment with no instrument landing system to rely on.

Overview

Providenciales International Airport is the main international airport serving the Turks and Caicos Islands, a British Overseas Territory, and is operated by the Turks and Caicos Islands Airports Authority (TCIAA). It is a hub for the locally based carriers interCaribbean Airways and Caicos Express Airways, and in 2023 it was officially renamed Howard Hamilton International Airport, though the older name remains in common use. For a visiting VFR or airline-sim pilot it is a notable Caribbean field: a single very long runway handling everything from light aircraft to widebody jets, without an ILS to fall back on.

Airspace & Location

The airport lies on Providenciales in the Caicos Islands, part of the Turks and Caicos Islands archipelago, at coordinates 21.7738 N, 72.2687 W and an elevation of 16 feet above mean sea level. It is the territory's principal international airport; the other, JAGS McCartney International Airport, serves Grand Turk Island further to the east.

Runways

The airport has a single physical runway, 10/28, measuring 9,188 feet in length with a hard surface, and both runway ends are lit for night operations. There is no ILS installed.

Radio & Navigation

Providenciales approach control operates as PROVO APP on 126 MHz. Ground movements are handled on 121.9 MHz, and the tower frequency is 119.9 MHz. No ILS is available at the field.

History

Scheduled air service to Providenciales dates back at least to the late 1970s, when Southeast Airlines operated a three-times-weekly Lockheed L-188 Electra service to Miami via Grand Turk and South Caicos. Through the 1980s the airport saw an evolving roster of carriers flying to Miami, including Air Florida with Boeing 737 jet service in 1984, Cayman Airways and Atlantic Gulf Airlines in 1985, Pan American World Airways from 1985 into the early 1990s with Boeing 727-200s, and British Caribbean Airways operating a BAe 146-100 on a Tortola-Providenciales-Miami routing in 1986. The 1990s brought Carnival Air Lines, American Airlines, and Turks and Caicos Airways, with American expanding through the 1990s and by 2001 operating three daily nonstop Boeing 737-800 flights to Miami plus a seasonal Saturday service to New York JFK. A runway extension and terminal renovation programme was completed by December 2014. In 2023 the airport was officially renamed Howard Hamilton International Airport, although the Providenciales International Airport name has remained in dominant use outside government sources.

The Airfield Today

Providenciales International Airport is operated by the Turks and Caicos Islands Airports Authority and functions as the main international hub for the territory, hosting more than 12,000 commercial aircraft operations a year. It serves as a base for the locally established carriers interCaribbean Airways and Caicos Express Airways, alongside a range of international airlines connecting the islands to North America and beyond.
