The airfield has long served La Ceiba, with scheduled airline service dating back to at least 1950 when SAHSA operated Douglas DC-3 flights linking it to other Honduran cities as part of a wider Pan American World Airways system timetable. In the early 1980s, Belize Airways flew British Aircraft Corporation BAC One-Eleven jets nonstop between Golosón and Belize City, connecting onward to Miami, while Transportes Aereos Nacionales (TAN Airlines) operated Boeing 737-200 and Lockheed L-188 Electra services to Miami via San Pedro Sula. By 1993 SAHSA was flying Boeing 737-200 jets nonstop from Grand Cayman, Roatan, San Pedro Sula and Tegucigalpa, with direct flights from Miami, New Orleans and Belize City, while local carrier Islena Airlines (later Avianca Honduras) operated Fokker F27, Embraer EMB-110 Bandeirante and Beechcraft 99 turboprops on domestic routes. The airport's alternative name, Hector C. Moncada Air Base, reflects its continuing military role alongside civil operations.
Golosón remains an active airline airport serving La Ceiba, with current scheduled service including Aerolineas Sosa to Roatan, San Pedro Sula and Tegucigalpa, Cayman Airways to Grand Cayman, and CM Airlines to Guanaja, Roatan and Utila. The field continues to combine civil and military functions, with customs and immigration officials present given its status as an international point of entry.
