General Roberto Fierro Villalobos International Airport (MMCU), also known as Chihuahua International Airport, serves the city of Chihuahua in northern Mexico and is operated by Grupo Aeroportuario Centro Norte. It is one of only a handful of Mexican airports with three runways, shares its site with a Mexican Air Force base, and is notably isolated, with the nearest airport offering passenger flights over 300 kilometres away in Ciudad Juárez.
MMCU is a large civil and military airfield on the high plains of northern Mexico, handling domestic and international airline traffic for Chihuahua City as well as cargo, flight training and general aviation. It shares its site with Mexican Air Force Base No. 13 (BAM-13), and its unusual three-runway layout, high field elevation of 4,432 ft, and relative isolation from other airports make it a distinctive destination for a simulator pilot flying VFR in the region.
The airport lies at coordinates 28.7023 N, 105.963 W, about 12 kilometres northeast of Chihuahua city centre, at an elevation of 4,432 ft above mean sea level. It sits within the airspace served by Chihuahua Approach, and is the principal airport for the region, with the nearest other airport offering scheduled passenger flights located more than 300 kilometres away in Ciudad Juárez.
MMCU has three physical runways, all hard-surfaced and lit. The main runway, 18L/36R, is 8,554 ft long and is equipped with an ILS on the 36R approach. A second parallel runway, 18R/36L, has declared lengths of 7,934 ft (18R) and 5,304 ft (36L), the difference likely reflecting a displaced threshold or differing declared distances between the two ends. A shorter crosswind runway, 05/23, measures 3,606 ft.
Arriving and departing traffic should expect to work Chihuahua Approach (Chihuahua APP) on 121 MHz, with Chihuahua Tower (Chihuahua TWR) on 118.4 MHz for the runway environment. An ATIS broadcast is available on 127.9 MHz. An instrument landing system is provided for runway 36R.
The airport is named after Roberto Fierro Villalobos, a Mexican Air Force aviator who played a role during the Mexican Revolution. It is home to Air Force Base No. 13 (Base Aérea Militar No. 13, Chihuahua), which hosts Air Squadron 110 flying Cessna 182 aircraft and Air Squadron 205 flying Beechcraft T-6 Texan II aircraft, alongside an aviation platform, three hangars and supporting facilities. The field is one of only three airports in Mexico built with three runways, the others being Tampico and Mexico City-AIFA.
MMCU functions as a large international airport handling scheduled airline services alongside cargo operations, logistics flights, and an active Mexican Air Force presence. It supports general aviation through two dedicated aprons, referred to as the north and south aprons, which accommodate both fixed-wing aircraft and helicopters, and the airport is also used for tourism and flight-training activity in the region.
