Monterrey International Airport (MMMY), also known as General Mariano Escobedo International Airport, is a major international gateway serving Greater Monterrey from Apodaca, Nuevo León, in northern Mexico. It offers a long, lit primary runway alongside a shorter crosswind strip, full radar approach control and tower service, making it a busy but straightforward destination for a simulator pilot flying airline or general aviation traffic into northern Mexico.

Overview

Monterrey International Airport, officially General Mariano Escobedo International Airport, serves the city of Monterrey and the wider Nuevo León region from Apodaca. It is operated within the Grupo Aeroportuario Centro Norte (OMA) network, in which VINCI Airports holds a significant stake, and functions as the principal hub for northern Mexico, handling both major domestic carriers and international services. For a sim pilot it presents a large, professionally controlled aerodrome with a long main runway suited to airliner operations and a shorter secondary runway for lighter traffic.

Airspace & Location

The airport lies in Apodaca, Nuevo León, roughly 24 kilometres northeast of downtown Monterrey. It sits within controlled airspace served by Monterrey approach control, and pilots should expect to work with approach, tower and ground frequencies when operating in the vicinity.

Runways

Monterrey has two physical runways. The main runway, 11/29, is 9,846 feet long with a hard surface and runway lighting, suitable for the largest airliner types using the field. The secondary runway, 16/34, is 5,909 feet long with a hard surface but is not listed as lit. There is no ILS approach associated with the field. Field elevation is 1,260 feet.

Radio & Navigation

Monterrey Approach operates on 119.75 MHz (callsign Monterrey APP). The ATIS broadcasts on 127.7 MHz. Ground movements are handled on 121.9 MHz, and the tower, callsign Monterrey TWR, operates on 118.1 MHz. No ILS is available at the field.

History

Monterrey International Airport was inaugurated on 25 November 1970 with the landing of a Mexicana de Aviación Boeing 727, built to replace the nearby Del Norte International Airport whose limited safety infrastructure and encroaching urban growth prevented further expansion. The airport is named after General Mariano Escobedo, a nineteenth-century military officer from Nuevo León. By the 1990s it had become a regional hub for Aerolitoral, the regional subsidiary of Aeroméxico, and in the early 2000s it served as a hub for Aviacsa. In 2006 the low-cost carrier Viva was established at Monterrey, and Terminal C was later built to accommodate low-cost operators such as Interjet and Volaris as the airport diversified into low-cost and cargo operations. In July 2022 VINCI Airports acquired a 30 percent stake in Grupo Aeroportuario Centro Norte (OMA), which has operated the airport and twelve others across northern and central Mexico since 1995. Aerus began operations at Monterrey in 2023, establishing a hub with domestic and short-haul international routes, and in December 2023 an extension of Metro Line 6 to the airport was officially announced.

The Airfield Today

Monterrey International Airport remains the busiest airport in northern Mexico and the fourth busiest in the country as a whole, having handled over 15.6 million passengers in 2025. It is a hub for Aeromexico, Magnicharters and VivaAerobus, and a focus city for Volaris and Aerus, operating across three passenger terminals that together support a substantial mix of domestic and international scheduled services.
