Xoxocotlán International Airport (MMOX/OAX) serves Oaxaca de Juárez, capital of the state of Oaxaca, from a site a few kilometres south of the city at a field elevation of nearly 5,000 feet. Xoxocotlán International Airport, officially Aeropuerto Internacional Xoxocotlán, is a civil international airport in the municipality of Santa Cruz Xoxocotlán that principally serves the city of Oaxaca de Juárez. It is the main air gateway to the state of Oaxaca, handling both domestic and international scheduled traffic, and is notable to visiting pilots for its high field elevation and single long runway set among surrounding high terrain.
The airport lies in the municipality of Santa Cruz Xoxocotlán, in the community of San Juan Bautista la Raya, roughly 7 km south of the centre of Oaxaca de Juárez. The surrounding ground is relatively flat to the southwest but rises into hills to the northeast, with the highest nearby feature, Cerro Yari Grande, reaching about 2,200 m and lying some 6.6 km east of the field. The nearest other airports of note are Huatulco, about 145 km away, Veracruz, about 245 km away, and Puebla, about 296 km away.
The airport has a single physical runway, 01/19, of hard surface construction and lit, measuring approximately 8,039 to 8,040 feet in length. There is no ILS.
Air traffic services are provided by Oaxaca Approach on 121.1 MHz and Oaxaca Tower on 118.3 MHz.
The city of Oaxaca de Juárez lies a short distance to the north of the field and provides an obvious visual reference for pilots approaching from that direction. To the east, the high ground of Cerro Yari Grande stands out against the otherwise flatter terrain to the southwest of the airport and can assist with orientation on arrival.
The airport is operated by Grupo Aeroportuario del Sureste (ASUR) and handles both domestic and international scheduled airline services. Carriers using the field include Volaris, SkyWest Airlines, Viva, Aeroméxico and Aeroméxico Connect, and American Airlines, linking Oaxaca with destinations such as Mexico City, Houston, Denver, Dallas-Fort Worth and Los Angeles among others.
