It is one of Mexico's busiest gateways, handling substantial domestic and international traffic, and offers a single long paved runway well suited to airline and general aviation operations alike.
Puerto Vallarta International Airport (ICAO: MMPR, IATA: PVR), formally named Licenciado Gustavo Díaz Ordaz International Airport, serves the resort city of Puerto Vallarta and the wider Riviera Nayarit and Jalisco coast region. It is a major commercial gateway connecting the area to destinations across Mexico, the United States, Canada and the United Kingdom, and for a visiting VFR or GA pilot it presents as a large, controlled international field with a single long hard-surfaced runway.
The airport lies on the Pacific coast of Jalisco state, within the Puerto Vallarta urban area and just north of Marina Vallarta on Banderas Bay, close to the border with Nayarit state. Its coordinates are 20.6801 N, 105.254 W at a field elevation of 16 feet. As a large international airport it is served by its own approach and tower control, and pilots should expect to operate within controlled airspace around the field.
The airport has a single physical runway, 04/22, orientated northeast-southwest. Both runway 04 and runway 22 are recorded at approximately 10,199 feet in length, with a hard, lit surface. There is no ILS.
Radio services are provided under the callsigns Vallarta App, Vallarta ATIS and Vallarta Tower. Vallarta Approach operates on 121.3 MHz, Vallarta ATIS broadcasts on 127.5 MHz, and Vallarta Tower operates on 118.5 MHz.
Marina Vallarta, immediately adjacent to the south of the airport, and the wider expanse of Banderas Bay are the principal visual landmarks for locating and approaching the field from the coast.
The airport takes its official name from Gustavo Díaz Ordaz, a former President of Mexico. It has developed into a key gateway for the Riviera Nayarit and Jalisco coast, growing to connect Puerto Vallarta with dozens of destinations in Mexico, the United States, Canada and the United Kingdom.
Puerto Vallarta International Airport ranks among the busiest airports in Mexico, handling both scheduled domestic and international airline traffic across a large number of routes and carriers. General aviation and corporate traffic is handled through a separate FBO facility operated by Corporate Air Services company Aerotron, alongside the main commercial terminal facilities. As an international airport of entry it is equipped to handle customs and immigration processing for arriving flights.
