Carlos Rovirosa Pérez International Airport (MMVA/VSA) serves Villahermosa, capital of the Mexican state of Tabasco, and is also the nearest commercial gateway to the Maya ruins at Palenque. It offers a single hard-surfaced runway with an ILS approach, and combines scheduled domestic airline traffic with general aviation and flight training activity.

Overview

Carlos Rovirosa Pérez International Airport, commonly known as Villahermosa International Airport, lies on the outskirts of Villahermosa in the Mexican state of Tabasco. It is operated by Grupo Aeroportuario del Sureste (ASUR) and named after Carlos Rovirosa Pérez, a pioneer of Mexican aviation who was born in the city. For a simulator pilot the field is notable both for its role as the principal air gateway to Tabasco and northern Chiapas, and as the closest active commercial airport to the Palenque Maya ruins, alongside a genuine mix of airline, general aviation and flight-training traffic.

Airspace & Location

The airport sits in the Dos Montes community on the outskirts of Villahermosa, having been built there in the late 1970s as the city expanded beyond its older, closer-in airfields. Approach control is provided by Villahermosa APP, with Villahermosa TWR handling the aerodrome itself, indicating that the field sits within controlled airspace served by its own approach and tower units.

Runways

The airport has a single physical runway, 08/26, 7202 feet long with a hard surface and runway lighting. An ILS is available for runway 08, giving instrument approach capability into the field.

Radio & Navigation

Arriving and departing traffic should expect to work Villahermosa APP on 120.7 MHz for approach control, and Villahermosa TWR on 118.7 MHz for tower services within the immediate vicinity of the aerodrome. An ILS is available for runway 08.

History

By 1935 Villahermosa was served by three separate airfields: José Suárez Airfield in what is now the España neighbourhood, El Playón Airfield in the city centre, and Roberto Fierro Airfield in the area now known as Tabasco 2000. Roberto Fierro Airfield has a particular claim to aviation history in the city, having received Compañía Mexicana de Aviación's inaugural cargo flight in 1928 and, in 1929, the first passenger flight into Villahermosa, flown by a Ford trimotor of Mexicana de Aviación. As the city grew through the late 1970s, a new airport was built in the Dos Montes community to replace these older fields, and the present airport was inaugurated on 2 May 1979. It has since been served over the decades by a succession of Mexican carriers including Aeromar, Aero California, Aerocaribe, Aviacsa, Interjet and Mexicana, and at times by international services to Panama City with Copa Airlines and to Houston with Continental Express, Aeromexico Connect and United Express, traffic that was closely tied to the regional oil industry. The passenger terminal was expanded in 2006 and again in 2013.

The Airfield Today

Villahermosa International Airport continues to handle scheduled domestic airline services together with tourism traffic, flight training and general aviation activity. The general aviation apron provides stands for fixed-wing aircraft and heliports for private aviation, and civil aviation hangars sit adjacent to the passenger terminal. The commercial apron has nine stands for narrow-body aircraft, and the field is capable of handling up to twenty operations per hour.
