Jaime González Airport (MUCF/CFG) is the international gateway for Cienfuegos, a city on Cuba's southern coast, and also serves nearby tourist areas such as Playa Rancho Luna and the colonial town of Trinidad. It offers a single long, hard-surfaced runway and is of interest to visiting pilots both for its aviation heritage and its former role as a Cuban military air base.
Jaime González Airport lies close to the city of Cienfuegos on Cuba's southern coast and functions as that region's international airport, handling both scheduled and seasonal international flights alongside domestic traffic. It is named in honour of Jaime González Crocier (1895-1920), one of the pioneering figures of early Cuban aviation, and the field also has a military past as a Cuban Revolutionary Armed Forces air base, giving it a dual civil and historical character that will interest visiting pilots.
The airport sits on Cuba's southern coast in Cienfuegos Province, about 4 km (2.5 miles) from the city of Cienfuegos itself. It serves not only the city but the surrounding tourist coastline, including Playa Rancho Luna, Playa Girón, Playa Larga and Playa Ancón, as well as the colonial city of Trinidad and the wider south-central region of Cuba.
The airport has a single physical runway, 02/20, which is 7,899 feet long with a hard surface and is lit for night operations. There is no ILS available.
Air-to-ground communications are available on 340.7 MHz, worked as Cienfuegos RDO. Tower services are provided on 118.9 MHz, worked as Cienfuegos TWR.
The airport takes its name from Jaime González Crocier (1895-1920), a key figure in the early history of Cuban aviation. Beyond its civil role, the site has also served as an inactive Cuban Revolutionary Armed Forces air base, having been home to the 3684 Helicopter Regiment operating Mil Mi-8TB transport helicopters together with Mil Mi-24D and Mi-35 attack and gunship helicopters. During earlier wartime years the base operated under a non-descript postal designation, using the Fleet Post Office Atlantic address 317 FPO NY, and was referred to by the US Navy under the code word ODOP.
Jaime González Airport continues to operate as an international airport for Cienfuegos, handling both domestic and international flights, including seasonal international services. It remains linked to its earlier identity as a military air base, though that military use is now inactive.
