The airport is named in memory of Juan Vitalio Acuña Núñez, known by the pseudonym Vilo Acuña, a farmer from the Sierra Maestra region who supported Fidel Castro's rebel forces during the Cuban Revolution. He was promoted to the rank of Comandante in November 1958, helped found the Communist Party of Cuba in 1965 and served on its central committee, before being killed during a guerrilla campaign in Bolivia on 31 August 1967. The airport and its runway were redone in 2022.
The airport continues to handle both domestic and international flights serving visitors to Cayo Largo del Sur. The terminal is divided into separate arrivals and departures buildings and is air-conditioned, with smoking permitted only in a designated area. There is no jet bridge, and mobile staircases are used to board and disembark aircraft on the tarmac.
