Staniel Cay Airport is a small, single-runway airstrip serving Staniel Cay in the Exuma Cays of the Bahamas, a popular gateway for private and charter flights to this laid-back sailing and diving destination. With a short hard-surfaced runway and no instrument approaches, it is very much a VFR-only field best suited to light aircraft.

Overview

Staniel Cay Airport sits on the small island of Staniel Cay in the Exuma Cays, within the Black Point District of the Bahamas. It is a modest, single-strip aerodrome with three private hangars, used mainly by light aircraft bringing visitors to this popular boating, diving and swimming-pig destination. Several small operators, including Titan Air, Flamingo Air and Makers Air, have maintained offices at the field, and it remains a characteristic example of a Bahamian out-island strip flown into almost exclusively under visual flight rules.

Airspace & Location

The airfield lies on Staniel Cay in the Exuma Islands chain, roughly 75 miles southeast of Nassau. It is a remote out-island strip with no control tower, and pilots should expect uncontrolled Bahamian airspace typical of the Exuma Cays, sharing the area with other small island airstrips such as Norman's Cay and George Town.

Runways

The field has one physical runway, 17/35, with a hard surface measuring 2,770 feet in length. There is no ILS or other instrument approach aid, so all arrivals and departures are conducted visually.

Radio & Navigation

Traffic at Staniel Cay uses UNICOM on 122.8 MHz for advisory calls; there is no air traffic control service at the field. No navaids or instrument approaches are published for the airport.

Visual Reference Points

Staniel Cay is approached either from the banks side to the west or from the Exuma Sound side to the east, both described as relatively straightforward run-ins to the strip. The island itself, with its distinctive cays and surrounding shallow banks, together with the Staniel Cay Yacht Club and marina, serve as useful visual landmarks when inbound.

History

The airport has long served as the main air link for Staniel Cay and the surrounding Exuma Cays, with local operators Titan Air, Flamingo Air and Makers Air basing offices there over the years. Flamingo Air has operated flights linking the strip with Nassau.

The Airfield Today

Today the airstrip continues to handle light aircraft, private charters and scheduled services bringing visitors to Staniel Cay, with Makers Air noted as operating scheduled flights from Fort Lauderdale. The field has three private hangars but no facilities aimed at larger or commercial aircraft, reflecting its role as a small out-island gateway rather than a full-service airport.
