Stella Maris Airport is a small public airfield on Long Island in the Bahamas, serving the Stella Maris settlement and resort area on the island's northern reaches. With a single hard-surfaced runway and UNICOM-only radio coverage, it offers straightforward VFR access for pilots visiting this quiet corner of the southern Bahamas.

Overview

Stella Maris Airport serves the Stella Maris community and resort on Long Island in the Bahamas. It is a single-runway public airfield with no instrument approach aids, making it a straightforward VFR destination for pilots exploring the Out Islands. The field lies close to the Stella Maris Resort, which it was originally built to serve.

Airspace & Location

The airport is located at Stella Maris on Long Island, Bahamas, at coordinates 23.5828, -75.2683. It sits at very low elevation, just 3 feet above mean sea level, reflecting the flat, low-lying terrain typical of the island.

Runways

Stella Maris has a single physical runway, 13/31, measuring 4022 feet with a hard surface. There is no ILS or other instrument approach aid available.

Radio & Navigation

The airport uses UNICOM for air-ground communication, with the callsign UNIC on 122.8 MHz. No other navaids or instrument approach facilities are published for the field.

Visual Reference Points

The airport lies approximately half a mile from the Stella Maris Resort, which serves as a useful landmark for pilots identifying the field from the air.

History

The airport was designed and built by Jack Henry Cordery, who emigrated from England in 1967 to take up the role of Estate Development Manager for the Stella Maris Estate Company, and the field was constructed to serve the newly developed resort. Bahamasair operated scheduled turboprop services into Stella Maris for many years, flying Fairchild Hiller FH-227 aircraft in 1975, replacing them with Hawker Siddeley HS 748s from 1979, and later using de Havilland Canada Dash 8 Series 300 aircraft by 1999, primarily on routes to Nassau. Bahamasair no longer serves Stella Maris, having shifted its Long Island service to Deadman's Cay Airport near Clarence Town.

The Airfield Today

Current air service into Stella Maris includes Southern Air Charter, linking the field to Deadman's Cay and Nassau, and Makers Air, operating to Fort Lauderdale Executive Airport. The Stella Maris Resort also operates its own air service connecting the airfield with Nassau, Georgetown in Exuma, and other Bahamian islands.
