Nausori International Airport (NFNA), also known as Luvuluvu, is Fiji's secondary international gateway, sitting on the southeastern coast of Viti Levu close to the town of Nausori and about 23 km from the capital, Suva. It offers a single instrument runway with ILS support on one direction, making it a useful and historically interesting destination for VFR and IFR flights within the Fiji island group.

Overview

Nausori International Airport serves as Fiji's secondary international airport, behind Nadi, and is the principal airfield for the capital, Suva. It has long been a hub for domestic and regional operators, having once hosted the headquarters of Air Pacific (the forerunner of Fiji Airways), and today it remains a base for Fiji Airways, Fiji Link and Northern Air. For a simulator pilot, its mix of a full ILS approach, a single paved runway and a compact domestic-international operation make it an interesting and manageable destination in the South Pacific.

Airspace & Location

The airport lies in the Central Division of Fiji, on the southeastern side of Viti Levu, in the town of Nausori, roughly 23 km from Suva. It sits close to Nadi International Airport's area of operations on the same island, though Nadi remains the primary international gateway; onward international connections from Nausori typically transit through Nadi.

Runways

Nausori has a single paved runway orientated 10/28. Runway 10 is 5,734 ft long, hard-surfaced, lit, and equipped with an ILS approach. Runway 28 is 6,128 ft long, also hard-surfaced and lit, but without an ILS.

Radio & Navigation

Aircraft operating at Nausori should expect to work Approach on 119.7 MHz, with ATIS broadcast on 128.5 MHz. Tower operates on 119.7 MHz. Runway 10 is served by an ILS approach for instrument arrivals.

History

Nausori's airfield origins trace back to 1942, when it was built by United States Navy Seabees, giving it a wartime construction history typical of many Pacific airfields of that era. It subsequently developed into Fiji's secondary international airport, and for a period hosted the headquarters of Air Pacific on the airport property before that carrier was rebranded as Fiji Airways. A significant runway upgrade project, valued at around 60 million dollars, extended and widened the runway, with the works completed in 2021.

The Airfield Today

Nausori International Airport is operated by Airports Fiji Limited and functions as a hub for Fiji Airways, Fiji Link and Northern Air, alongside services from Nauru Airlines. Fiji Link operates a wide domestic network from Nausori to destinations including Kadavu, Koro, Labasa, Lakeba, Savusavu, Taveuni and other outer islands, while Northern Air serves a similar spread of regional airfields. The airport has a single terminal building handling both domestic and international traffic, and passengers travelling further afield internationally generally transit through Nadi. As of 2018 a long-term master plan for further refurbishment and upgrade of the airport was under preparation.
