Vava'u International Airport, also known as Lupepau'u Airport, is the principal aerodrome serving the Vava'u island group in the Kingdom of Tonga, lying a short distance north of the main town of Neiafu. It offers a single hard-surfaced runway and handles both domestic and limited international traffic, making it a useful VFR destination for pilots exploring this part of the South Pacific.
Vava'u International Airport, known locally as Lupepau'u Airport, serves Vava'u Island and the wider Vava'u archipelago in Tonga. It is the main air gateway to this island group, handling domestic services within Tonga as well as a small number of international flights, and is of interest to the simulator pilot as an isolated Pacific island strip surrounded by open ocean and scattered islands.
The airport lies on Vava'u Island, around 10 km north of the island's main town of Neiafu, which serves as the capital of the Vava'u group. It functions as the principal airport for the archipelago and is the point of entry for the limited number of international flights operating into Vava'u.
The airfield has a single physical runway, 08/26, with a hard, lit surface. The 08 threshold offers 3931 feet of usable length, while the 26 threshold offers 4590 feet, and the field elevation is 223 feet.
Air traffic services are provided by AFIS on 118.1 MHz, with a flight service (FSS) frequency of 322.6 MHz also available. There is no ILS at the field.
The airport sits north of Neiafu, the main settlement and administrative centre of the Vava'u group, which can serve as a general reference point when approaching the island from the south.
The airport is also known by its Tongan name, Lupepau'u Airport, and has developed as the main air link for the Vava'u island group, with international services operating on a limited basis, notably to and from Fiji.
Vava'u International Airport continues to handle domestic flights within Tonga alongside a small number of scheduled international services. Customs facilities are present at the airport to process international arrivals, and the perimeter is fenced with security screening required for international flights.
