Moorea Temae Airport (NTTM/MOZ) is the gateway airfield for the island of Moorea in French Polynesia, sitting on the low-lying Temae peninsula in the island's northeast corner. It is a short hop from Tahiti across the strait, making it a popular short VFR sector for visiting pilots as well as a busy inter-island turboprop hub.
Moorea Temae Airport serves the island of Moorea in French Polynesia and takes its name from the nearby village of Temae in the island's northeastern corner. Operated by SETIL Aéroports, it is the main air link between Moorea and Tahiti, handling scheduled turboprop services from Air Moana and Air Tahiti. For a simulator pilot it offers an attractive short island-hopping flight across the strait from Tahiti, with a single coastal runway set against the dramatic backdrop of Moorea's volcanic peaks.
The airfield lies on the Temae peninsula in northeastern Moorea, about 7.5 km (4.0 NM) northeast of Afareaitu, the island's main village, and some 15 km (8.1 NM) west of Tahiti across the Sea of the Moon. Traffic in the area is worked by Tahiti Approach and Tahiti Tower, reflecting the airfield's place within the wider Tahiti-Faa'a control environment.
Moorea Temae has a single runway, 12/30, 4,060 ft long with a hard surface and runway lighting. There is no ILS.
Tahiti Approach is available on 121.3 MHz, the airfield's ATIS broadcasts on 128.8 MHz, and Tahiti Tower operates on 118.1 MHz. No instrument approach aids are published for the field.
The runway occupies the flat Temae peninsula on Moorea's northeastern shore, with the village of Temae adjacent and the high volcanic terrain of central Moorea rising immediately to the south and west. Tahiti and its Faa'a airport are visible across the water some 15 km to the east, providing a useful reference for the short inter-island crossing.
Construction of the runway at Moorea-Temae began in March 1967 and the airfield opened on 6 October 1967. In 1977 the aerodrome was transferred to SETIL, the Société d'Équipement de Tahiti et des Iles. The terminal building and additional parking were built in 1982, and the runway was lengthened in 1987 to accommodate ATR 42 operations. A new control tower was built in 1990, and further work in 2003 upgraded the field for ATR 72 services. On 9 August 2007, Air Moorea Flight 1121, a de Havilland Canada DHC-6 Twin Otter, crashed shortly after departure from Temae bound for Tahiti's Faa'a International Airport, with the loss of all 20 on board; the investigation found the cause to be failure of worn pitch-control cables following flap retraction after takeoff.
The airfield continues to operate as Moorea's principal air link, with Air Moana and Air Tahiti providing scheduled turboprop services to Bora Bora, Huahine-Fare, Papeete and Raiatea.
