Ryan's Creek Aerodrome is a small, historic airstrip serving Oban and the wider Stewart Island community in Southland, New Zealand. Built in the late 1970s to open up air access to the island, it remains the only aerodrome on Stewart Island and is the terminus for scheduled flights linking the island to the mainland.
Ryan's Creek Aerodrome sits on Stewart Island (Rakiura) in the far south of New Zealand, close to the small township of Oban on Halfmoon Bay. It is a modest single-runway airstrip that has, since the late 1970s, provided the island's only fixed-wing air link to the South Island mainland. For a visiting VFR pilot it offers a short, characterful approach into a remote and scenic corner of New Zealand, surrounded by native bush and the coastline of Rakiura National Park.
The aerodrome lies on Stewart Island, south of Bluff and the South Island, within the Southland region of New Zealand. It is situated a short distance from Oban, the island's main settlement on Halfmoon Bay, and is set amid the forested terrain that covers much of the island. As a small general aviation aerodrome it operates outside major controlled airspace structures, relying on pilot self-coordination in the vicinity.
Ryan's Creek has a single physical runway, 04/22, with a hard surface and lighting, measuring 1978 feet in length. There is no ILS or other instrument approach aid at the field.
Traffic at Ryan's Creek is coordinated on the CTAF frequency of 130.2 MHz. There is no ATC service, and no navaids or instrument approaches are available at the aerodrome, so arrivals and departures are conducted visually.
Ryan's Creek Aerodrome was built in the late 1970s to accommodate operations by Stewart Island Air Services, with the original strip formed from the native red rock of the area. In the mid-1980s the operator was renamed Southern Air Limited, under shareholders Keith Smith, Joe Cave, Bill Haslett and Sam Nicol, and around the same time the runway and taxiways were sealed with asphalt. In 1990 a hill at one end of the strip was levelled, giving aircraft more room to land and easier access to the airfield; the same year the operator replaced two of its Islander aircraft to ease maintenance and parts supply. Southern Air continued flying from the strip largely accident-free, though it suffered the loss of a Cessna 402 off Bluff Hill in August 1998 and a further landing accident involving another aircraft. In 1997 the company was bought by Allan Aitcheson and renamed Southern Air 1997 Limited, before being acquired in 2000 by Stewart Island Flights, which has operated from Ryan's Creek since.
Ryan's Creek remains the sole aerodrome serving Stewart Island and is used by Stewart Island Flights for scheduled commercial services to Invercargill Airport; Glenorchy Air has also operated services linking the strip with Queenstown. The single sealed, lit runway continues to handle light aircraft operations supporting the island's small community and its tourism and conservation traffic into Rakiura National Park.
