Wellington International Airport (NZWN) serves the New Zealand capital from the coastal suburb of Rongotai, a few kilometres southeast of the city centre. It is a major domestic hub with international links to Australia and Fiji, and is well known among pilots for its short single runway squeezed between Lyall Bay and the Cook Strait, with the terrain and coastal winds making it one of the more demanding airports in the country to operate into.

Overview

Wellington International Airport lies in the suburb of Rongotai, on a narrow strip of land between Lyall Bay and Evans Bay on Wellington's southern coast. It is New Zealand's third busiest airport by passenger numbers and a hub for Air New Zealand and Sounds Air, with international services to eastern Australia and Fiji alongside a dense network of domestic routes. For a visiting VFR pilot the field is notable for its single runway, tight surrounding terrain, coastal exposure to the Cook Strait, and the fact that it operates as a fully controlled international aerodrome rather than a general aviation field.

Airspace & Location

The airport sits within controlled airspace associated with Wellington's approach and tower services, in the suburb of Rongotai roughly 5.5 to 8 kilometres southeast of central Wellington. It is bounded to the south by Lyall Bay and the Cook Strait and to the north by Evans Bay, with the city and its surrounding hills close by to the northwest.

Runways

The airport has a single physical runway, 16/34, of hard surface construction and lit for night operations. The database records a length of 6,367 feet for runway 34 and 6,295 feet for runway 16, reflecting slightly different declared distances between the two directions; both ends are equipped with ILS.

Radio & Navigation

Wellington provides a full ATC service. Published frequencies are Approach on 122.3 MHz, ATIS on 126.9 MHz, Ground on 121.9 MHz and Tower on 118.8 MHz. Both runway ends are served by ILS.

Joining & Circuit Procedures

As a controlled international aerodrome, all arrivals and departures are handled by Wellington Tower and Approach, with pilots expected to obtain the ATIS on 126.9 MHz before contacting Approach on 122.3 MHz and Tower on 118.8 MHz as directed; specific circuit heights and joining procedures should be obtained from the current AIP or ATC on the day, as they are not detailed in the sources reviewed here.

Visual Reference Points

Lyall Bay, immediately south of the runway, and Evans Bay to the north are the principal coastal landmarks used to identify the airport from the air, with the city of Wellington and its surrounding hills providing a further visual reference to the northwest.

History

Wellington's airport was established in 1935 on the Rongotai site and was originally known as Rongotai Aerodrome. It has since grown into New Zealand's third busiest airport, developed over the decades to accommodate international jet services despite the constraints of its compact, coastally exposed site. The airport is operated as a joint venture between Infratil and Wellington City Council under Wellington Airport Limited.

The Airfield Today

Wellington International Airport today operates a single terminal handling both domestic and international traffic, and serves as a hub for Air New Zealand and Sounds Air. International services connect Wellington with Brisbane, the Gold Coast, Sydney and Melbourne in Australia, as well as Nadi in Fiji, alongside an extensive domestic network to centres such as Auckland, Christchurch, Nelson and Napier.
