Abha International Airport (OEAB/AHB) is a high-elevation international airport in the Asir Province of southwestern Saudi Arabia, sited between the cities of Abha and Khamis Mushait. It offers a single very long ILS-equipped runway and is a base for Flynas, making it an interesting destination for simulator pilots owing to its 6,844 ft field elevation and mountainous surroundings.
Abha International Airport lies in Asir Province in the mountainous southwest of Saudi Arabia, built on a site between the two cities it serves, Abha and Khamis Mushait. It is operated by the General Authority of Civil Aviation and is an operating base for Flynas. For a simulator pilot the field is notable chiefly for its high field elevation of 6,844 feet, its single very long runway and the surrounding highland terrain of Asir Province, all of which make approach and departure planning more demanding than at a typical sea-level airport.
The airport sits in Asir Province, on ground developed between the towns of Khamis Mushait and Abha, and serves both communities. It is classed as a large airport with scheduled airline service, reflecting its role as a major regional and international gateway for southwestern Saudi Arabia.
There is a single physical runway, 13/31, 10,969 feet long with a hard (asphalt) surface. It is lit, and an ILS is provided for runway 13.
Radio services include Khamis Approach on 124.5 MHz, Ground on 121.7 MHz and Tower on 118.1 MHz. An ILS is available for runway 13.
Construction of the airport began in mid-1975, carried out by Laing Wimpey Alireza, on a new site between Khamis Mushait and Abha; until then domestic flights in the area had been handled at a military airfield near Khamis Mushait. The airport became operational in 1977 as the international airport for Asir Province, complementing the domestic airport at Bishah. Passenger traffic grew strongly through the 2010s, driven mainly by domestic services, and the airport underwent terminal expansion, transitioning from regional to international status in 2020. The airport has also been the target of repeated Houthi missile and drone attacks during the Yemeni civil war, including incidents in June and July 2019, August 2020, February 2021 and August 2021, with a further drone attack reported in July 2026.
Abha International Airport today handles both domestic and international scheduled services and is an operating base for Flynas, alongside other carriers including Saudia, Flyadeal, Flydubai, Air Arabia, Air Cairo, EgyptAir, Jazeera Airways, Nesma Airlines, Nile Air, Qatar Airways and SalamAir, connecting Abha to destinations across Saudi Arabia and to points in the Middle East and North Africa.
