Yanbu Airport, named Prince Abdulmohsen Bin Abdulaziz International Airport after the province's second governor, lies on the Red Sea coast in western Saudi Arabia. It is operated by the General Authority of Civil Aviation and handles a mix of domestic and international scheduled services alongside general aviation movements, making it a useful and well-equipped port of call for a simulator pilot exploring the Red Sea coast.
The airport sits on the outskirts of Yanbu, a major port and industrial city, situated a few kilometres north of Yanbu Al-Bahr and northwest of Yanbu Industrial City. It lies within Saudi Arabian controlled airspace and is served by an AFIS unit rather than full air traffic control.
Yanbu has a single physical runway, 10/28, measuring 10,528 feet in length with a hard asphalt surface. Both directions are lit, and runway 28 is equipped with an ILS, allowing instrument approaches from that direction.
Pilots should call Yanbu AFIS on 118.1 MHz for aerodrome information and traffic advisories. A common traffic advisory frequency of 122.8 MHz is also listed, along with a miscellaneous frequency of 133.5 MHz. Runway 28 carries an ILS for instrument approaches.
The airport lies close to the coastline, a few kilometres north of Yanbu Al-Bahr and roughly twenty-five kilometres northwest of Yanbu Industrial City, both useful visual landmarks when approaching from inland or along the coast.
The airport opened in 1979 and takes its name from Prince Abdulmohsen bin Abdulaziz, who governed Medina Province between 1965 and 1985. A major expansion programme began in 2006 with a contract worth SAR188 million to upgrade facilities and build a new passenger terminal, which opened for traffic in November 2007. The expanded airport, which introduced the first passenger airbridges at a regional airport in Saudi Arabia, was formally inaugurated by King Abdullah in July 2009. International operations began later that year, on 24 December 2009, when AlMasria Universal Airlines launched flights to Cairo.
Yanbu Airport today handles a mixture of domestic carriers, including Saudia, Flyadeal and Flynas, and international services operated by carriers such as Air Arabia, Air Cairo, Nesma Airlines, Nile Air, Qatar Airways and Turkish Airlines. The field is AFIS-served rather than fully controlled, with the single instrument-equipped runway supporting both airline and general aviation traffic.
