Isfahan Shahid Beheshti International Airport is a major civil and military airfield in central Iran, lying in desert terrain east of the city of Isfahan and sharing its site with the Iranian Air Force's Khatami Air Base. It is the oldest airport in Iran and today handles substantial domestic and international traffic on a pair of very long parallel runways, one served by an ILS.

Overview

Isfahan Shahid Beheshti International Airport is the principal air gateway to the city of Isfahan and is named in honour of Shahid Beheshti. It is operated as a joint civil-military facility, with the Iranian Air Force's Khatami Air Base, built in the 1970s to support Iran's fleet of F-14 Tomcats, sited immediately adjacent to the civil airport. For a simulator pilot, the combination of two very long parallel hard runways, a busy mixed civil and military environment, and the desert setting on the Iranian plateau make it a distinctive destination.

Airspace & Location

The airport sits in a desert area roughly 18.5 kilometres east of the city of Isfahan, at an altitude of around 1,542 metres above sea level, on a site covering some 1,315 hectares. For administrative purposes the airport is treated as lying within Qahab-e Shomali Rural District, in the Central District of Isfahan County, Isfahan Province. The adjoining Khatami Air Base means the wider area includes active military airspace alongside the civil aerodrome.

Runways

The airfield has two parallel physical runways. Runway 07R/25L is 14,414 by roughly the same length feet long (14,413 ft on the reciprocal), hard-surfaced and lit. Runway 07L/25R is 14,400/14,399 feet long, also hard-surfaced and lit, with the 25R end additionally equipped with an ILS. Field elevation is 5,046 feet.

Radio & Navigation

Air traffic services are provided on Tower on 118.3 MHz and Ground on 121.9 MHz, with Approach available on both 121.6 MHz and 122.05 MHz. An ATIS broadcast is transmitted on 128.25 MHz. An ILS is provided for runway 25R, supporting instrument approaches to that runway.

Visual Reference Points

The most useful visual landmark for locating the airfield is the co-located Khatami Air Base immediately adjacent to the civil airport, along with the airport's position in open desert terrain to the east of Isfahan city.

History

Isfahan Shahid Beheshti is the oldest airport in Iran. Its original terminal was located at Soffeh, with commercial flights later transferred to the current site, a desert location 18.5 kilometres east of Isfahan covering 1,315 hectares at an elevation of 1,542 metres. The airport began operations in 1982, handling both passenger flights and pilot training. The Khatami Air Base next to the airport was constructed in the 1970s specifically to support Iran's F-14 Tomcat fleet. The airport has been the scene of several notable incidents, including the 1965 heavy-landing damage to an Iranian Airlines Vickers Viscount, undercarriage failures on Iran Air Fokker 100 aircraft in 2009 and 2010, and the diversion of Taban Air Flight 6437 through Isfahan in January 2010 before its emergency landing at Mashhad.

The Airfield Today

The airport today has two terminals, one handling domestic flights and one international services, and serves as a hub or focus city for a number of Iranian carriers including Iran Aseman Airlines, Asa Jet, Iran Air, Karun Airlines, Pars Air and Qeshm Air, with international connections to destinations such as Dubai, Doha, Istanbul and Kuwait City among others.
