Bandar Abbas International Airport lies on the Persian Gulf coast of southern Iran, a joint civil-military field serving the port city of Bandar Abbas in Hormozgan Province. Its two long asphalt runways, one served by an ILS, make it capable of handling wide-body traffic such as the Boeing 777 and 747, and its role as a focus city for Iran Air and Karun Airlines gives it a busy mix of domestic and Gulf-region flying for a visiting VFR or IFR pilot to study.
Bandar Abbas International Airport (ICAO: OIKB, IATA: BND) is a large international airport on the southern coast of Iran, serving the city of Bandar Abbas in Hormozgan Province. It is operated by the Iran Airports Company but is also shared with military users, including the Iranian Air Force, Islamic Republic of Iran Navy Aviation and the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, giving it the character of a busy joint civil-military aerodrome. For a simulator pilot it offers two substantial hard runways, one equipped with an ILS, and a route network that spans both domestic Iranian destinations and international services across the Persian Gulf.
The airport sits roughly 12 kilometres east of the city of Bandar Abbas, on the Persian Gulf coast of Hormozgan Province in southern Iran, at coordinates 27.2186 N, 56.3778 E.
The airfield has two parallel hard-surfaced runways. Runway 03R/21L is 12,007 feet long, lit, and equipped with an ILS on the 21L approach. Runway 03L/21R is 11,348 feet long and also lit. Field elevation is 16 feet.
Radio services at Bandar Abbas comprise Approach on 124.2 MHz, ATIS on 128.65 MHz and Tower on 118.1 MHz. An ILS is available for runway 21L, giving instrument approach capability into the airport's longer runway.
The airport has a documented military dimension alongside its civil role: it is used by the Iranian Air Force, Islamic Republic of Iran Navy Aviation and the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps as well as by Iran Airports Company for scheduled civil traffic. Its most notable historical event was the shooting down of Iran Air Flight 655 shortly after departure from Bandar Abbas in 1988. In more recent history, an IRIAF F-4 Phantom II crashed near Bandar Abbas on 14 October 2012, killing two airmen.
Bandar Abbas International Airport handles both domestic and international scheduled services, connecting to numerous cities within Iran and to destinations across the southern Persian Gulf, including Dubai and Doha. It is a focus city for Iran Air and Karun Airlines, and its runways are capable of accommodating wide-body aircraft such as the Boeing 777 and 747. In 2017 the airport handled around 1,289,000 passengers and just over 11,400 aircraft movements.
