The airport sits at Mashhad, a major city in northeastern Iran close to the borders with Turkmenistan and Afghanistan. It is a large, high-elevation aerodrome at 3,245 feet amsl, positioned near the city and its well-known religious sites. Given its status as Iran's second-busiest airport and a joint military base, it is served by approach control and lies within controlled airspace appropriate to a major international gateway.
Mashhad has two parallel physical runways aligned 13/31. The northern runway, 13R/31L, is 12,850 to 12,851 feet long, has a hard surface and is lit. The southern runway, 13L/31R, is 12,485 feet long, also hard-surfaced and lit, and is equipped with an instrument landing system on the 31R end. Both runways are substantial in length, reflecting the airport's role supporting large airliners and military aircraft.
Pilots can expect to work Approach on 127.3 MHz, monitor the ATIS on 126.4 MHz, and contact Tower on 118.1 MHz. An instrument landing system is available for runway 31R, supporting instrument approaches to that runway.
