Ras Al Khaimah International Airport (OMRK/RKT) is a large international airport in the northern emirate of Ras Al Khaimah, United Arab Emirates, operated by the Department of Civil Aviation and serving as a hub for Air Arabia. Its single long, ILS-equipped runway and mix of passenger, cargo and flight-training traffic make it a notable stop for pilots operating in the northern Gulf.
Ras Al Khaimah International Airport is a public international airport serving the emirate of Ras Al Khaimah in the United Arab Emirates, operated by the Department of Civil Aviation. It functions as a hub for Air Arabia and hosts passenger, cargo, aircraft maintenance and flight-training operations, making it an active and varied field for a visiting sim pilot to explore.
The airport lies in Ras Al Khaimah, one of the seven emirates of the UAE, in the northern part of the country bordering Oman. It is situated some 18 kilometres from Ras Al Khaimah city itself, in the general area of Digdaga.
The airport has a single physical runway, 16/34, some 12,344 feet long with a hard (asphalt) surface and lit for night operations. An ILS is provided for runway 34.
Ground movements are handled on GND 121.6 MHz, with tower control on TWR 118.25 MHz. An instrument landing system serves runway 34 for precision approaches.
The airport was inaugurated in 1976 by the ruler of Ras Al Khaimah, Sheikh Saqr bin Mohammad Al Qasimi. RAK Airways began operating as the national carrier with a hub at the airport in 2007, suspending operations in 2008 amid the global economic crisis, relaunching in 2010, and finally ceasing operations permanently in 2013. Air Arabia took up scheduled commercial flying from the airport in 2014, with Ras Al Khaimah designated as one of its hubs for an initial ten-year period. The airport grew strongly around this time, with efforts made to attract cargo traffic linked to the Ras Al Khaimah Free Trade Zone. In July 1998 a Ukrainian Ilyushin Il-76 cargo aircraft crashed into the sea shortly after a heavily overloaded takeoff from the airport, with the loss of all eight crew. In 2015 the airport was used as a filming location for the Hindi film Airlift, starring Akshay Kumar.
The airport today operates two passenger terminal buildings alongside cargo, aircraft maintenance and aviation training facilities. Air Arabia operates scheduled passenger services from Ras Al Khaimah to destinations across the Middle East, North and East Africa, Central Asia and the Indian subcontinent, with other carriers including Air India Express and IndiGo also serving the field, and IndiGo Cargo operating freighter services. The airport is also described as an important flight-training base for the region.
