Sharjah International Airport (OMSJ) is a large international airport on the UAE's Gulf coast, sited a short distance southeast of Sharjah city and close to Dubai. It is the home base of the low-cost carrier Air Arabia and one of the busiest cargo hubs in the Middle East, offering a single long runway equipped with ILS on both directions.

Overview

Sharjah International Airport is a major UAE gateway located a few nautical miles east-southeast of Sharjah city, close to Dubai and the northern emirates. It is the home base of Air Arabia, the Middle East's first low-cost carrier, whose headquarters sit within the airport property, and it ranks among the region's leading air-freight hubs. For a simulator pilot it offers the chance to fly into a busy, modern Gulf hub with a single long hard-surfaced runway served by ILS at both ends, amid a steady flow of regional and international airline traffic.

Airspace & Location

The airport lies about 7 nautical miles east-southeast of Sharjah city, and is only around 10 to 15 kilometres from Sharjah's centre and from Dubai, placing it in close proximity to one of the world's busiest air-traffic regions. It also sits within a few kilometres of the northern emirates of Ajman, Umm Al Quwain, Ras Al-Khaimah and Fujairah, and provides road access to Sharjah's seaports.

Runways

Sharjah has a single physical runway, 12/30, a hard-surfaced strip roughly 12,327 feet long (12,324 feet in the reciprocal direction), lit, and equipped with ILS at both ends. There is no second runway at the field.

Radio & Navigation

Published frequencies for Sharjah are: Approach 124.675 MHz, ATIS 122.4 MHz, Ground-to-Ground 121.875 MHz, and Ground/Tower 118.6 MHz. Both runway ends are served by ILS, supporting instrument approaches to runway 12 or runway 30 depending on operational direction.

History

Sharjah International Airport traces its aviation role back to 1932, when it began serving as a gateway for travel through the UAE and the wider Gulf region. It grew over subsequent decades to accommodate an increasing number of regional and international carriers. In 2003 it became the official hub of Air Arabia, a development that helped drive further growth in traffic as the carrier expanded into new markets within a five-hour flying radius. The airport has also become one of the largest air-cargo hubs in the Middle East, with ground handling volumes running into the hundreds of thousands of tonnes annually.

The Airfield Today

Today Sharjah International Airport operates as a busy single-terminal international airport, home base to Air Arabia and handling substantial passenger and cargo traffic alongside regional and international scheduled carriers. It remains one of the busiest airports in the UAE and a significant air-freight hub for the Middle East, with round-the-clock arrival and departure operations.
