Muscat International Airport (OOMS/MCT) is Oman's principal gateway, sited at Seeb on the coast of the Muscat metropolitan area, roughly 32 km from the old city centre. It is a large, modern international hub for Oman Air and SalamAir, with two long paved runways equipped with ILS, making it a straightforward and well-equipped destination for simulator pilots flying airliner or business-jet operations into the Gulf.
Muscat International Airport lies at Seeb, on the northern coast of Oman within the greater Muscat metropolitan area, and is operated by Oman Airports. It is the country's busiest and largest airport, serving as the hub for the flag carrier Oman Air and for the low-cost carrier SalamAir, and it also functions as a joint civil-military facility hosting the Royal Flight of Oman and the Royal Air Force of Oman. For a simulator pilot, it offers a substantial, well-lit international field with two long asphalt runways and instrument approaches, set against the dramatic backdrop of Oman's coastal mountains.
The airport sits within Omani controlled airspace at Seeb, about 32 km (20 miles) from Muscat's old city and capital area, on the coastal plain to the northwest of the metropolitan sprawl. As the country's principal international aerodrome it is served by area control and approach radar, with an ATIS broadcast and clearance delivery separate from ground and tower functions, reflecting its status as a major hub airport rather than a small VFR field.
Muscat has two parallel hard-surfaced runways aligned 08/26, both lit. The northern runway, 08L/26R, is the longer of the pair at up to 13,370 ft (08L) and 12,945 ft (26R), and is equipped with ILS on both thresholds. The southern runway, 08R/26L, measures up to 10,454 ft (08R) and 11,716 ft (26L); it is lit but has no ILS listed. Field elevation is 20 ft.
Muscat is served by a full suite of frequencies befitting a major international airport: Radar/Approach on 121.2 MHz, ATIS on 126.8 MHz, Clearance Delivery on 125.575 MHz, Ground on 121.8 MHz and 121.875 MHz (North Ground), and Tower on 118.4 MHz. The 08L/26R runway is equipped with ILS for instrument approaches, giving pilots a reliable means of joining in reduced visibility.
As a large controlled international airport, arrivals and departures at Muscat are handled under radar approach control and tower instructions rather than an informal visual circuit; pilots should expect to be sequenced by ATC using the published frequencies for approach, clearance delivery, ground and tower in turn.
The airport is readily identified from the air by its position on the flat coastal strip northwest of Muscat, with the Hajar mountain range inland providing a distinctive backdrop, and the two long parallel east-west runways clearly visible against the surrounding development at Seeb.
Muscat's aviation story began in 1929 with Bayt al-Falaj Airport, the capital's first airfield, known for its sharp turns and steep descents due to the surrounding mountains and used chiefly by Gulf Aviation, Oman International Services and the Petroleum Development Oman Company. As aircraft grew larger and Bayt al-Falaj's approach was judged increasingly hazardous, the government selected Seeb village for a new airport, awarding the design contract to the Netherlands Airport Consultancy and the runway and taxiway construction to Joannou & Paraskevaides. The field opened ceremonially as Seeb International Airport on 1 January 1973, initially with a single terminal and only two check-in and immigration desks, and was night-rated in the mid-1970s. During the Gulf War in 1991 the airport hosted Royal Air Force BAe Nimrods cooperating with the Royal Navy of Oman in the 'Magic Roundabout' exercises, and a detachment of VC10 tankers from No. 101 Squadron RAF operated from the base training with Jaguars. The airport was renamed Muscat International Airport on 1 February 2008, and a major new terminal and runway, begun in 2007, opened on 18 March 2018, with the first arrival an Oman Air flight from Najaf.
Muscat International Airport now spans some 2,200 hectares and operates as a joint civil-military facility, with a Royal Terminal and Royal Flight hangars adjacent to the older terminal building, alongside the Royal Air Force of Oman's presence. The current main terminal, opened in 2018, was built to handle up to 20 million passengers a year in its first phase, with capacity planned to rise to 48 million under later phases, and includes a VIP terminal for private jets and an on-site airport hotel. In 2019 it became the first international airport in the world to install the Aaronia AARTOS counter-drone detection system. As a major international hub, prior permission is required for general aviation and non-scheduled flights.
