Baghdad International Airport, also known as New Al Muthana Air Base (ICAO ORBI, IATA BGW), is Iraq's principal international gateway, sited on the western outskirts of Baghdad. It offers two long, hard-surfaced parallel runways with ILS approaches, making it a substantial destination for simulator pilots flying airliner or military types into the Middle East.

Overview

Baghdad International Airport, combined with the New Al Muthana Air Base, is the major civil and military aerodrome serving Baghdad, the capital of Iraq. Identified by the ICAO code ORBI and IATA code BGW, it sits at an elevation of 112 feet and has long served as both the country's principal international airport and a significant military facility, giving it a dual character that appeals to sim pilots flying either airliner or military traffic into the region.

Airspace & Location

The airport lies in Baghdad Governorate on the western side of Baghdad city. As a large international aerodrome it sits within controlled airspace with its own approach and area control services, reflected in the range of ATC frequencies published for the field, including a dedicated approach control and an area control service identified as Baghdad ACC.

Runways

The airfield has two parallel hard-surfaced runway pairs aligned northwest/southeast. The longer pair, 15L/33R, measures 13,116 feet, is lit, and is equipped with ILS on both ends. The shorter pair, 15R/33L, measures approximately 10,824 to 10,825 feet and is likewise equipped with ILS on both ends, though it is not listed as lit.

Radio & Navigation

Radio services published for Baghdad include Tower on 118.7 MHz, Ground on 121.7 MHz, Approach on 128.2 MHz, Departure on 131.9 MHz, ATIS (INFO) on 127.25 MHz, and an area control service identified as Baghdad ACC on 123.52 MHz. Additional frequencies listed are RDO on 127.35 MHz, HEL (Helo) on 131.7 MHz, PMSV (METRO) on 116.15 MHz, and POST (COMD POST) on 133.5 MHz. Both runway pairs are equipped with ILS.

The Airfield Today

Baghdad International Airport functions as a large international airport with airline service and is recorded as the home base for several simulator community members. It carries a customs tag, indicating facilities for international arrivals and departures.
