Hamad International Airport (OTHH) is Qatar's principal international gateway, lying on the Arabian Gulf coast east of Doha and serving as the home hub of Qatar Airways. It is a large, modern facility built to handle heavy long-haul and A380 traffic, with two parallel widebody-capable runways and full precision approach equipment, making it a major hub rather than a typical general aviation or VFR destination.
Hamad International Airport serves Doha, the capital of Qatar, and is the home base of Qatar Airways. It opened on 30 April 2014, replacing the older Doha International Airport nearby, and was purpose-built as a modern long-haul hub, notably the first airport designed specifically to accommodate the Airbus A380. For the simulator pilot it offers an impressive, large-scale international airport experience with long parallel runways, full ILS coverage and heavy widebody traffic typical of a major Gulf hub.
The airport sits on the coast of the Arabian Gulf east of the city of Doha, at coordinates 25.2746 N, 51.6084 E, close to sea level with a field elevation of 10 feet. It replaced Doha International Airport, which lies a short distance to the west, and functions as Qatar's principal international aerodrome.
Hamad International has two parallel runway pairs, both hard-surfaced and lit, each equipped with ILS. The longer pair, 16L/34R, is 15,924 feet in length, while the shorter pair, 16R/34L, measures 13,955 feet. Both runways are aligned north-northeast to south-southwest, suited to the airport's heavy widebody and long-haul traffic.
Radio services include ATIS on 128.85 MHz and D-ATIS on 126.85 MHz, with Hamad Terminal Information also broadcast on 126.85 MHz. Doha Approach Radar operates on 121.1 MHz, and Hamad Tower is on 118.525 MHz. All four runway ends are equipped with ILS, providing precision approach guidance for instrument arrivals.
Hamad International Airport was built to replace the ageing Doha International Airport, which by the end of the twentieth century was more than seventy years old and needed major upgrades. Originally known as New Doha International Airport during construction and initially scheduled to open in 2008, the project suffered a series of costly delays, including a cancelled soft launch in April 2013 due to safety concerns that took nine months to resolve. The airport finally began passenger operations on 30 April 2014 with a ceremonial Qatar Airways flight arriving from the nearby Doha International Airport, and all carriers formally relocated on 27 May 2014. It is named after Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani, the former Emir of Qatar, and was the first airport in the world designed specifically to handle the Airbus A380.
