Tok Junction Airport (PFTO/6K8) is a state-owned public-use airfield sitting just east of the town of Tok in Alaska's Southeast Fairbanks Census Area, at the junction of the Alaska and Glenn Highways. It offers a single lit asphalt runway at just over 1,600 feet elevation and serves as the primary general aviation and air-taxi field for the Tok area, distinct from the older, now-closed Tok Airport (PATJ) to the south.
Tok Junction Airport is a state-owned, public-use general aviation airport serving the small community of Tok in interior Alaska. It is categorised by the FAA as a general aviation facility and has historically supported a mix of air-taxi and private flying, making it a useful and characterful stop for a simulator pilot exploring the Alaska Highway corridor.
The airport lies in the Southeast Fairbanks Census Area of Alaska, about one nautical mile east of the central business district of Tok, near the junction of the Alaska Highway and Glenn Highway that gives the town its name. It should not be confused with the separate, now-closed Tok Airport (PATJ), which lay two nautical miles south of town, or with the private Tok 2 Airport (8AK9), situated on the opposite side of the Glenn Highway from that former field.
Tok Junction Airport has a single physical runway, 07/25, of 2,993 feet with a hard (asphalt) surface and runway lighting for both directions. There is no ILS at the field.
No communications frequencies are published for Tok Junction Airport, and there is no instrument landing system. Pilots should expect to operate on a common traffic advisory basis and rely on see-and-avoid procedures typical of uncontrolled Alaskan airfields.
The airport is readily identified from the air by its position immediately east of the town of Tok and close to the prominent junction of the Alaska Highway and Glenn Highway, from which the town and airport take their name.
Tok Junction Airport is one of three historic airfields associated with the Tok area. It has long served as the town's principal state-owned public-use airport, distinct from the older Tok Airport (PATJ), which had a 1,690 by 45 foot gravel and turf runway two nautical miles south of town before its closure, and from the private Tok 2 Airport (8AK9) across the Glenn Highway. Tok Junction was included in the FAA's National Plan of Integrated Airport Systems for 2011-2015 as a general aviation facility, reflecting its role in supporting both local flying and scheduled air-taxi services into the surrounding bush communities.
Tok Junction Airport continues to support general aviation and scheduled air-taxi operations, historically including flights by 40-Mile Air to Chicken, Chisana and Northway. In the mid-2000s the field recorded around 2,700 aircraft operations a year, split roughly evenly between air taxi and general aviation traffic, with around 39 aircraft based there, the great majority single-engine types. No communications frequencies are currently published, and pilots planning a visit should confirm any prior permission or local procedures through appropriate official channels before flying in.
