Lanai Airport (PHNY/LNY) is the sole aerodrome serving the island of Lanai in Hawaii, sitting on a plateau some three miles southwest of Lanai City. A single hard-surfaced, lit runway with an ILS handles the interisland Cessna Caravan services that are the island's principal air link, making it a straightforward but scenically rewarding VFR destination for the simulator pilot exploring the Hawaiian island chain.
Lanai Airport is a state-owned, public-use aerodrome that exists to serve the small island of Lanai in Maui County, Hawaii. It is operated by the Hawaii Department of Transportation, Airports Division, and is the only airport on the island, handling scheduled interisland flights, air taxi work and some general aviation and charter traffic. For a sim pilot it offers a compact, single-runway field on a remote Pacific island, with an ILS approach and a straightforward layout that make it an interesting short hop from Honolulu or Kahului.
The airport lies about three nautical miles (roughly 3.4 miles) southwest of the central business district of Lanai City, on the island of Lanai in Maui County, Hawaii. Radio contact for the surrounding airspace is handled by Honolulu Center.
Lanai Airport has a single physical runway, 03/21, 4,999 feet long with a hard surface and runway lighting. Runway 03 is equipped with an ILS approach.
Weather is available via ASOS on 118.375 MHz. The common traffic advisory frequency (CTAF) is 122.9 MHz. Honolulu Center provides area radar/centre service on 119.3 MHz, and there is a remote communications outlet (RCO) on 117.7 MHz. Runway 03 is served by an ILS approach.
Air service to Lanai began in 1930, when Inter-Island Airways (the forerunner of Hawaiian Airlines) started flying eight-passenger Sikorsky S-38 amphibious aircraft to a sod landing field owned by the Hawaiian Pineapple Company; barrels that had surrounded the field as hazards were removed in March 1930. That original field proved too small for larger equipment, and once the S-38s were retired around the start of the Second World War, air service to the island lapsed. In 1944 the Territorial Department of Public Works proposed a new Class IV airport four miles southwest of Lanai City, and although a 1945 legislative appropriation of $150,000 was found to be faulty in wording, the Governor released $50,000 from his contingency fund to grade an airstrip on land made available by the Hawaiian Pineapple Company. Hawaiian Airlines resumed service to the new site on September 18, 1946, flying Douglas DC-3s onto what was still an unpaved sod strip, which proved difficult in wet weather and dusty in dry conditions. The present passenger terminal complex was built in 1964, and the airport has since been paved and developed into its current form, categorised by the FAA as a non-hub primary commercial service facility.
Lanai Airport remains the only airport serving the island and is owned and operated by the State of Hawaii's Department of Transportation, Airports Division. It is served by Mokulele Airlines operating Cessna 208B Grand Caravan EX aircraft on interisland routes to Honolulu and Kahului, alongside a mix of air taxi, charter and general aviation activity; scheduled commercial and air taxi flights account for the great majority of movements. The airport complex includes passenger parking and rental car facilities together with cargo and airport support buildings. As of April 2022 there were no aircraft permanently based at the field.
