Bohol-Panglao is the primary airport serving Bohol province, occupying a purpose-built site on Panglao Island since November 2018. Sited amid the low limestone terrain of Barangay Tawala, it replaced the constrained former Tagbilaran Airport and now handles domestic and some international traffic to this popular diving and beach destination. For a visiting VFR pilot it offers a single long hard-surfaced runway well suited to a range of aircraft, set against a backdrop of reef-fringed coastline and nearby Tagbilaran City.
Bohol-Panglao serves as Bohol's principal airport, built on Panglao Island in the Central Visayas region of the Philippines to replace the older Tagbilaran Airport, which closed to traffic when this field opened in November 2018. It lies in Barangay Tawala within the municipality of Panglao, an island renowned for its dive sites and beaches, and functions as the main air gateway for both domestic travellers and international visitors bound for Bohol's tourism industry. The airport has been described as the first eco-airport in the Philippines, reflecting the deliberate design and construction effort that went into building on the island's difficult limestone ground.
The airport sits on Panglao Island, which lies immediately southwest of the main island of Bohol in the Central Visayas region of the Philippines, within Bohol province. It is about 20 kilometres from Tagbilaran, Bohol's provincial capital, and is less than an hour's flight from Mactan-Cebu, making it a convenient stop for pilots routing through the central Philippines. Panglao Island itself comprises the municipalities of Dauis and Panglao and is connected to the Bohol mainland by bridges, giving pilots a clear coastal and island reference for the approach.
The field has a single physical runway, 03/21, 8196 feet long with a hard surface and runway lighting on both directions. There is no ILS available, so arrivals and departures should be planned around visual or other non-precision procedures.
Panglao Island presents a distinctive coastal profile for visual navigation, with Alona Beach on its southern shore being the island's best-known landmark and a popular reference point for pilots orienting themselves over the island. The bridges linking Panglao to the Bohol mainland, along with the built-up area of Tagbilaran City some 20 kilometres to the northeast, offer further useful visual cues when approaching from the Bohol Sea or from the direction of Cebu.
Panglao Island's coralline limestone terrain, the youngest of the limestone formations in western Bohol, delayed the airport's development for decades, since the soluble rock is prone to forming caves and sinkholes that complicated construction. After decades of planning and roughly three years of building work, the new airport opened on 28 November 2018 on a 230-hectare site in Barangay Tawala, replacing the former Tagbilaran Airport, which had become inadequate for Bohol's growing tourist traffic. It was inaugurated as part of a push to modernise the province's transport infrastructure and has been promoted as the country's first eco-airport, or "green gateway."
The airport operates as the main gateway to Bohol and Panglao Island, with near-hourly daytime domestic services to and from Manila operated by Philippine Airlines, Cebu Pacific, and AirAsia, along with flights to and from Davao and El Nido on alternating days. International services have resumed since the pandemic, including flights to South Korea and scheduled charter flights from China. The airport also functions within easy reach of Cebu, which lies less than two hours away by fast ferry, reinforcing its role as a regional hub for visitors travelling on to Bohol's dive sites and beaches.
