Pohnpei International Airport lies on Deketik, a small islet off Pohnpei Island in the Federated States of Micronesia, linked to the main island by a causeway near the capital, Palikir. It offers a single lit asphalt runway and handles a modest but geographically wide-ranging mix of international and inter-island services, making it a distinctive waypoint for any Pacific island-hopping flight.

Overview

Pohnpei International Airport (ICAO: PTPN, IATA: PNI) serves Pohnpei, the largest island in the Federated States of Micronesia, and sits close to Palikir, the national capital. The field occupies Deketik, a lagoon islet connected to Pohnpei Island by a causeway, giving arriving and departing traffic a striking over-water setting. For a simulator pilot, the appeal lies in its remote mid-Pacific position, the causeway-linked islet layout, and its role as a stop on long inter-island routes such as the Island Hopper service.

Airspace & Location

The airport is located on Pohnpei Island, State of Pohnpei, in the Federated States of Micronesia, at coordinates 6.9851 N, 158.21 E. It sits on the islet of Deketik, joined to the main island by a causeway, and is close to Palikir, the seat of the FSM national government.

Runways

Pohnpei International has a single physical runway, 09/27, of 6,586 feet, with a hard surface and runway lighting. There is no ILS at the field.

Radio & Navigation

The airport uses a common frequency of 123.6 MHz for both CTAF and RDO communications. There is no published ILS approach.

Visual Reference Points

The runway and airfield occupy the islet of Deketik, joined to Pohnpei Island by a causeway, which forms a clear visual marker when approaching from over the lagoon. Palikir, the national capital, lies close to the airport and can assist with orientation.

History

An extension and improvement project began in 2009, funded by the Government of Japan with around US$29 million, aimed at lengthening the runway by 228 metres and upgrading terminal facilities and the apron; the work was intended to be completed by 2011. The project followed an incident in May 2008 in which a Boeing 727 cargo aircraft overran the runway, forcing the airport to close for six days.

The Airfield Today

Pohnpei International continues to handle a limited but wide-reaching pattern of scheduled and charter flying. United Airlines operates its Island Hopper service linking Guam and Honolulu, calling three times weekly in each direction, along with Guam-Chuuk-Pohnpei flights, while Air Niugini serves Port Moresby and Nauru Airlines connects Pohnpei to Brisbane, Koror, Majuro, Nauru and Tarawa. Caroline Islands Air provides charter flights to a range of outlying islands including Chuuk, Kosrae, Kapingamarangi, Nukuoro, Pingelap and Woleai, and Asia Pacific Airlines carries cargo, including US mail, to and from the airport.
