Taitung Airport lies on the eastern seaboard of Taiwan, serving Taitung City and the wider county of the same name. It is operated jointly by the Civil Aeronautics Administration and the Ministry of National Defense, reflecting its dual civil-military role, and since 2014 has also hosted the APEX flight academy, giving it a steady flow of training traffic alongside scheduled domestic services. For a simulator pilot, the field is of interest both for its single long ILS-equipped runway and for its scenic coastal setting.
The airport sits at Taitung City in Taitung County, on Taiwan's south-eastern coast, at coordinates 22.7553N 121.1E. It is tagged as a military-civilian facility, sharing infrastructure between the Civil Aeronautics Administration and the Ministry of National Defense.
Taitung has a single physical runway, 04/22, 7,993 feet long with a hard surface and runway lighting throughout. An ILS approach is available for runway 04, while runway 22 is lit but without an instrument approach.
Pilots should expect to work Taitung Approach on 119.4 MHz and Taitung Tower on 118.1 MHz, with ATIS broadcast on 127 MHz. Runway 04 is served by an ILS.
The airfield began life as a simple holding room facility in 1977 before being upgraded to full airport status on 1 July 1981. Shortly afterwards it relocated to its present site to meet strategic requirements set by the military, becoming a full civil aviation airport from that point. On 1 June 2001 it was promoted to second-class airport status, and later that year an expansion programme began, part of a wider government policy to shift industry eastwards and boost local tourism. Since 2014 the APEX flight academy has been based at the field, adding a training role to its civil and military functions.
Taitung Airport operates daily from around 7am to 6pm and continues to combine civil and military use. Domestic carriers including Daily Air, Mandarin Airlines and Uni Air have served the field, with Daily Air notably linking Taitung to the outlying islands of Lanyu and Lyudao; Mandarin Airlines and Uni Air have operated the Taipei-Songshan route. The presence of the APEX flight academy on the airfield means training movements are a regular feature of local traffic.
