Kagoshima Airport (RJFK/KOJ) is a large international airport at Kirishima in Kagoshima Prefecture, southern Kyushu, serving as the principal gateway to Kagoshima City and the Satsunan Islands. For the simulator pilot it offers a single long, ILS-equipped runway set among the hills of southern Kyushu, with a busy mix of domestic turboprop, jet and occasional international traffic.

Overview

Kagoshima Airport is a large public airport at Kirishima in Kagoshima Prefecture, operated for airfield purposes by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport, with the terminal run separately by Kagoshima Airport Building Co., Ltd. It is the second-busiest airport in Kyushu after Fukuoka, acting as the main hub for services to Kagoshima City and as the principal gateway to the Satsunan Islands. It is home base for Japan Air Commuter and Skymark Airlines, and for the simulator pilot it is a satisfying single-runway international field with a full ILS approach and a good mix of jet and regional turboprop traffic against a backdrop of Kyushu's volcanic terrain.

Airspace & Location

The airport lies at Kirishima in Kagoshima Prefecture, about 30 km (18.4 miles) northeast of Kagoshima City and roughly 29.6 km northeast of Kagoshima-Chūō Station, close to the Mizobe Kagoshima Airport Interchange on the Kyushu Expressway (E3). As a large international airport it sits within controlled airspace with its own approach, tower and departure services.

Runways

Kagoshima has a single physical runway, 16/34, oriented roughly north-northwest to south-southeast. It is 9,807 feet long, has a hard (asphalt/concrete) surface, and is lit along its full length. Runway 34 is equipped with an ILS approach. Field elevation is 879 feet.

Radio & Navigation

Radio services include Approach on 126 MHz, ATIS on 127.05 MHz, Clearance Delivery on 121.8 MHz, Departure on 119.4 MHz, Ground on 121.7 MHz, a TCA frequency of 120 MHz, and Tower on 118.2 MHz. An ILS is available for runway 34, supporting instrument approaches into the field.

History

Kagoshima Airport opened in 1972, replacing a former Imperial Japanese Navy airfield in the Kamoike area near the city centre, which had served as Kagoshima's main airport from 1957. The site of that earlier airfield was later redeveloped as a new town, and today houses the Kagoshima Prefecture government offices among other buildings. The new airport's runway was originally 2,500 metres long and was extended to 3,000 metres in 1980. An international terminal opened in 1982 and a cargo terminal followed in 1987. During the 1970s and 1980s the airport received international services from Air Niugini, Cathay Pacific, China Airlines and Nauru Airlines, and Japan Airlines operated a route to Singapore via Hong Kong and Bangkok. In 2006 Kagoshima was the destination of the final scheduled commercial flight of the NAMC YS-11.

The Airfield Today

Kagoshima remains a major Kyushu airport, serving around 6.1 million passengers in 2018 and ranked as the second-busiest in the region after Fukuoka. It is home base for Japan Air Commuter, a Japan Airlines regional affiliate, and for Skymark Airlines, and hosts the headquarters of Japan Air Commuter and New Japan Aviation. The airport handles a substantial domestic network to Tokyo, Osaka, Nagoya and Fukuoka as well as services to the outlying Satsunan Islands, alongside a smaller international operation with links to destinations such as Seoul and Taipei.
