Nyutabaru Air Base is a Japan Air Self-Defense Force fighter station near Shintomi in Miyazaki Prefecture, Kyushu, built around a pair of long parallel hard-surfaced runways. It is home to JASDF tactical fighter and trainer squadrons, including the Blue Impulse aerobatic team, and regularly hosts joint exercises with United States Marine Corps aviation units.
JASDF Nyutabaru Air Base sits at Shintomi in Miyazaki Prefecture on the Japanese island of Kyushu and is operated by the Japan Air Self-Defense Force. It is a working military fighter base rather than a civil airfield, and for a simulator pilot its appeal lies in its pair of very long parallel runways, its ILS-equipped approach, and its role hosting JASDF fighter squadrons, T-4 jet trainers and the Blue Impulse aerobatic display team, alongside periodic large-scale joint exercises with United States Marine Corps aviation units.
The base lies in Shintomi Town, Miyazaki Prefecture, on Kyushu, within controlled airspace served by Miyazaki Approach. It is described as being roughly a ten-minute drive from the nearby town of Takanabe, which gives a useful ground reference for the base's position on the eastern Kyushu coastal plain.
The airfield has two parallel hard-surfaced runways aligned 10/28. The northern runway, 10R/28L, is 8,780 feet long, lit, and hard-surfaced. The southern runway, 10/28, is 8,791 feet long, also lit and hard-surfaced, and is equipped with an ILS on the 28 approach. Field elevation is 246 feet.
Miyazaki Approach operates on 120.1 MHz. Ground movements are handled on 27.58 MHz. A PMSV frequency of 34.46 MHz is listed under the callsign METRO, and the tower operates on 126.2 MHz. The southern runway (28) is served by an ILS.
The town of Takanabe, roughly ten minutes' drive from the base, serves as a useful ground landmark for locating the airfield from the air, with Nyutabaru lying close to the coastal plain of eastern Kyushu.
Nyutabaru has long served as a JASDF fighter station, home to tactical fighter squadrons including the 305th Tactical Fighter Squadron, which flies the Kawasaki T-4 jet trainer alongside fighter types. The base is also the home of Blue Impulse, the JASDF's aerobatic display team, whose performances are a centrepiece of the annual Nyutabaru Air Festival held at the base in Shintomi Town. In recent years the airfield has hosted United States Marine Corps aviation units, including Marine Aircraft Group 12 and Marine Fighter Attack Squadron 121, under the Aviation Training Relocation programme and during the biennial bilateral Keen Sword exercise, training alongside JASDF squadrons to build combined operational readiness.
Nyutabaru remains an active JASDF fighter base, home to tactical fighter and trainer squadrons and to the Blue Impulse aerobatic team. It continues to host joint training with United States Marine Corps aviation units under the Aviation Training Relocation programme and during exercises such as Keen Sword. The base opens to the public for the annual Nyutabaru Air Festival, held at Shintomi Town, which features flying displays including Blue Impulse. As a military installation, prior permission is required for any flying activity.
