Amami Airport (RJKA/ASJ) serves Amami Oshima, the largest of the Amami Islands in Kagoshima Prefecture, Japan, with a single instrument-equipped runway suited to both jet airliners and general aviation traffic. It sits on the northeastern side of the island, well away from the main town, and offers straightforward VFR access for pilots exploring the Ryukyu chain.
Amami Airport is the principal aerodrome for Amami Oshima, an island in the Kagoshima Prefecture of southern Japan. It handles scheduled airline services linking the island to Kagoshima, Fukuoka, Tokyo, Osaka and Okinawa, as well as short inter-island hops to Kikai, Tokunoshima and Yoron. For a simulator pilot, its island setting, single long runway with ILS, and network of short inter-island routes make it an interesting waypoint for exploring the Nansei island chain.
The airport lies on Amami Oshima in the Kagoshima Prefecture, in the East China Sea/Nansei Islands area of Japan, roughly 21.9 kilometres east-northeast of Amami City in the northeast corner of the island. Traffic in the wider area is worked by Naha Area Control and Naha Information, reflecting the airport's position within the airspace overseen from Okinawa.
Amami Airport has a single physical runway, 03/21, of 6,521 feet with a hard surface. It is lit and equipped with an ILS serving runway 03.
Aerodrome traffic is handled on an Air/Ground frequency of 118.15 MHz. Area control is available on 132.3 MHz, worked as Naha Control, and Naha Information provides an information service on 134.8 MHz. The field is equipped with an ILS on runway 03.
The airport began life as Amami Oshima Airport, opening on 1 June 1964 with a 1,240 metre runway situated about two kilometres southwest of the present site. As traffic grew, a new airport capable of accepting jet aircraft was built at the current location, opening on 10 July 1988 with a 2,000 metre runway; the original airfield was closed at that time. Remnants of the old airport can still be traced from the air, and much of its former site has since become parkland.
Amami Airport remains an active commercial gateway for Amami Oshima, with scheduled services operated by Japan Airlines and its regional partners Japan Air Commuter and J-Air, together with Peach Aviation and Skymark Airlines. Destinations include Tokyo Haneda and Narita, Osaka Itami and Kansai, Fukuoka, Kagoshima, Naha in Okinawa, and the neighbouring islands of Kikai, Tokunoshima and Yoron. The airport supports car rental and taxi services for onward travel around the island.
